I am looking to possible rent a jeep for the day and explore the island on our own. I'm not sure where our ship (Carnical Celebration) is docking. Is it work the $70 to rent the jeep and explore the beaches on our own or is it rough on gringos who don't speak the language? I'm wanting to find some quiet beaches and spend the relaing, shop in the evening and hit Carlos and Charlies before heading off to the boat.
Most all the tourist places speak some English. Renting a jeep is a must if you want to go to the other side of the island where they have sandy quiet beaches. There are miles of beach area where you can pull into a desolate area on the side of the road. I would be careful though in not getting out too far due to the undertow and strong currents. I know that AVIS has some 1 day cruisers specials offered at www.cozumelinsider.com You can also find out about other places you may want to visit
I highly recommend renting a Jeep for the day and exploring the island on your own. We did it in April, and we're doing it again in two weeks. You can go wherever the mood strikes you and move on when you're ready. Cozumel is not hard to get around in, just be sure and stay on paved roads. The rental places will give you maps.
When are you going? We're sailing on the Celebration on 9/13.
