The other day my wife mentioned that on our next vacation she would like to see Mayan or Aztec ruins and I thought to myself that a mexican cruise would be good for this. I started looking around a bit to see what was available and it occured to me that I really have no clue where the ruins are and what ports I would want to stop at. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? We're not really into the whole beach/partying thing, but suggestions for other shore excursions and sights in mexico would be welcome as well.
Re: Where do I want to go for Mayan/Aztec type ruins?
For a first-time Mayan experience, you probably want to do a Western Caribbean cruise.
There are myan ruins not far from many of the ports. Tulum & Copa sites are easily accessible by ship from several Mexican ports such as Calica, Playa del Carmen,
Costa Maya, etc. Some of the more extensive ruins require land tours some distance from ports. Chichen Itza is probably easier to see from a land tour do to time restraints on a cruise ship.
Quirigua and Copan are both accessible from the port at Santo Tomas de Castilla, Guatamala. My next Mayan experience will probably be a land trip based in the Rio Dulce area of Guatamala. There are many Mayan sites that can be seen in most any direction and hotels and food are very inexpensive there.
If you do a google search under Mayan Ruins, you should find a tremendous amount of info.
