We are headed to Progresso on our Cruise ship and know nothing about this area. Money is tight so we are not planning on doing a tour so wondered if there is anything right off the ship, least expensive way to get to a beach, etc. Please help.
Progresso is a docking port, however, the pier is so long that they run shuttles. There are a few small but nice shops (nice marachi band playing) as you get off before catching the shuttle. Progresso itself is not much, a real small Mexican town, not a resort atmosphere. Interesting to poke around a little bit, the markets etc., (i.e. piles of shrimp and not an ice cube in sight) but the smells got to me rather quickly. There is a nice little "craft market" at the shuttle stop area. All in all can probably see it in an hour or so. A good day to enjoy the ship if not doing an excursion (we didn't either). Cheers and enjoy your cruise.
Thanks so much for the information, very helpful. It's our first stop so we'll be anxious to do something in a "port" but are saving all the $$ for a dolphin excursion in Cozumel - we booked already off the ship. Just wanted the least expensive thing to do and we'll plan on walking around a bit but hitting the cruise ship for lunch and the pool.
HI - we really liked Progresso - easy walking around. We took a short bus tour for $2.00 each and it was quite informative (Just outside the market place) - beach was easy walk from the shuttle drop off - not sure if they charge for use or not. We enjoyed the shopping - and the bartering - have fun TTFN Jennifer
