If you have a car, my favorite restaurant in the wotld is "Dizz's As Is" in So. Laguna, but it's about a 45 minute drive, longer if you take the coastal highways.
Have tentatively decided on Sheraton San Pedro & want to stay close by--Our pre-cruse day is just tomake sure we arrive in time & get to wind down before the big sail away day! Would like a nice meal--anyplace with a view & a good bloody magarita or mojito?
There's a great restaurant in Long Beach right on the water ... I wanna say it's Captain something or other ... my friedn Steve will know. He and his wife took us to dinner there before we sailed out on teh Pride in February -- great view and drinks.

We have a long time before this cruise so when the name surfaces let me know---it doesn't sound like there's anything that stands out in San Pedro itself at this point.
The name of the restaurant is Parker's Lighthouse. Gorgeous city and bay views ... neat pier restaurant area.
Honestly, for *anything* to do, I would stay in Long Beach. It also has a free shuttle service that will take you to the local attractions -- aquarium, Queen Mary, Pike's Pier etc.
Anyway, wanted to get you the name of the restaurant as soon as I knew.

Hcat, do take the tour if you can -- pretty interesting. I've heard, though, that the rooms are small. A good second option is the Coast Hotel, which is within walking distance to the Queen.

The Sheraton in SP is on the waternear the ship, but sadly it is not really in an entertainment zone. San Pedro is mostly residential/commercial (docks/dockworkers) unless you go to the western (upper) end. There it is almost completely residential. I live here so I can recommend some restaurants but you'd have to rent a car which you may not be doing. The one thing I know they have down on the waterfront is the 'red car' trolley that can take you to Cabrillo beach where you can walk out onto a fishing pier that is rather interesting. I would not recommend Ports-of-Call as it is rather run-down and often smells of rotting fish. Otherwise take a shuttle (if available) or a taxi across the bridges to Shoreline Village/The Pike/Pine Street in Long Beach and spend an afternoon at the shops, theatres, restaurants. Cheers!
LR has got the perfect idea ... Shoreline Village is a great part of Long Beach. That's also where that restaurant I mentioned is (Parkers Lighthouse, right on the water)

After re-reading this thread today I sort of thought this was a good plan for us---Now with Harry's added input-I know it will be a good choice. Can you tell me how far it is by cab from San Pedro & about what that would cost? Also any problem getting a cab back? Guess I am an over planner but it's fun to get all this info--my other half is the opposite--just wants the name of the ship & the itin...
Babylene, Celebrity leaves from the San Pedro terminal.
Hcat, if you are staying in San Pedro already, call the hotel to see whether they have a shuttle to any of the attractions in Long Beach -- Queen Mary, Shoreline Village or Pike Street.
If it were me, I would stay in Long Beach and just take the cab to the terminal (or possibly a hotel shuttle), because Long Beach has the red "trolley" that's free to hit all the attractions.

Thank you, Harry. So is Long Beach very close to San Pedro? Are you saying that even if we arrive late afternoon the day before, we should stay in Long Beach?
What would you rec. as a moderate non-super high rise in Long Beach.? Looks like San Pedro is not such a hot choice--only thought it would be good because it is in the Royal brochure as one of their pre-cruise hotels....But having no idea of the area it seems best to try & locate something else. Seems we will sail from San Pedro not only for this cruise but for hawaii as well when we are on Celeb. For East coast we have our set routine but this is a new set of adventures for us!
We are sailing on the Diamond Princess on Dec. 29 and we are staying at the Hyatt Regency Long Beach ( $77per night...Senior over 62 rate) for two nights, and going to Catalina Island one day. The Parker Lighthouse restaurant is within walking distance (about 1 block) and the hotel is located next to the convention center. There are numerous other restaurants, hotels and things to do in the area. It is about 15 minutes to San Pedro and about 45 min. from LAX.
We've booked the Holiday Inn Long Beach before through Hotwire -- got it for about $60 a night if I recall. It's farther away from the pier area though than the Hyatt. That sounds like a pretty good deal that Cruzers mentioned.
I've also stayed at the West Coast right on the bay -- very nice, large rooms, and walking distance to the Queen Mary. It's also a "stop" on the free trolley ride.

Cruzers:
We're on the Diamond with you. How do you plan on getting from the Hyatt to the Diamond in San Pedro? I'm guessing from your hotel rate that you're not doing a park-and-cruise package.
It looks like Cruzers has been in touch with Mazatlan Frank and is considering a tour with him. What do you think? Should we join them? Hahaha. I told him to count us in! Looks like we'll be able to go further afield on our country tour and there will only be four of us (not counting Frank) on it.
