Has anyone ever started thier cruise out of port of LA. We booked a 4 day cruise for my parents as a teaser....(to get them hooked) I am a little concerned with long term parking and ease in getting around to the ship. They both drive but being the worry wart daughter that I am, I dont want the cruise to start off on a bad note. I am really considering hiring a car to pick them up and take them to the port. It is probally about a 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive depending on LA traffic. Any comments or suggestions?????
Marie, it's *very* easy to do the long-term parking at the World Cruise Center ... plus they direct you to drop your bags first at the terminal and then park. It's $10 a day, and safe (we sometimes take the convertible up).
We live in north San Diego, and it takes an hour and a half to get to the terminal ... only bad (heavier traffic) stretch is about 22 miles on the 405.
Hope this all helps ... which ship will they be sailing?

Harry, since we're on the subject of L.A. World Cruise Center and parking...we will be taken to the port by friends. I am assuming there is also short term parking there as well so that the friends can get out with us for a bit prior to our departure?
It's on Monarch of the Seas. Thanks for the info. They live in Riverside and dont venture in to LA much anymore. I just want to make sure that they have a great time.
Thanks again!
Marie, I do know that the shuttle services her in San Diego offer rates to the cruise terminal ... maybe check into that as an option.
CeeCee, regarding your question -- the port allows (if I recall) the first 30 minutes free for drop-offs and pick-ups. Just have 'em break a few dollars in case the disembarkation takes some time. (By the way, they do take ATM now)

When you first enter the parking area you can either turn right into the main dropoff and long-term parking area (Now $12/day) or go straight and get a ticket. First hour is free and there is a free shuttle to/from the ship boarding area.

Harry,
I go to the port area about once a week and I pull into the Catalina Parking area (also used as overflow for the cruise ships and use the free 1 hour to gaze at the ships etc and last week I noticed it was now $12 per day.
I guess they have to pay for the new parking area that is almost finished for the busses.
Now I know that the hotel with shuttle is cheaper then the parking if you use Priceline or Hotwire even with tipping the driver. Still a great way to start vacation early.

Marie,
Did I see where you mentioned that your folks live in the Riverside area? If so, it's an easy drive to the terminal if they take the 91 freeway all the way to the 110. Then take the 110 south to Harbor Blvd. exit (they will also see signs on the 110 freeway for the World Cruise Terminal). The terminal is directly across the street from the end of the Harbor Blvd. offramp. We just took a trial run to the terminal yesterday from the Riverside area. Even with it being a holiday weekend, we were amazed at the lack of traffic. Unfortunately there were no cruise ships in port yesterday so I'm not sure if that affects traffic but I can only imagine that it does.
