We just got off the Norwegian Star (1/24). Had a 50 minute wait to get a taxi, supposedly due to another ship in port.
Not sure if this the norm, but would recommend booking something.
(Taxi from San Pedro to Long Beach was $36, friends who flew out of LAX paid $46-prices include tip).
Did your friends take a cab or a shuttle? We're trying to decide between a shuttle or a cab for a family of 5. I've read that a cab is only $25 from LAX to Long Beach but I can't find any verification, whereas the shuttle will cost us about $70. Any input would be great!
My friends took a taxi from San Pedro to LAX, it cost $46 with tip (for2).
From LAX to the Hilton in Long Beach the taxi cost was $65 with tip.
You might also want to check with local limo services, it may work out cheaper in the long run. Plus, you won't have to wait for the taxi or the Shuttle.
In retrospect, I wish we had taken a limo.
HI: HARRY MARTIN HAD RECOMMENDED TO ME, WWW.SUPERSHUTTLE.COM. THEY HAVE A PRICE OF AN "Exclusive Van Service (Private van up to 7 passengers)" OF $58.00 EACH WAY FROM EITHER AIRPORT TO THE PIER. CHECK IT OUT.
That's weird. When I go to their website I get a quote of $73 for the exclusive ride, and $28 for the first person of the shared ride, for a total of $64 for 5 of us. Primetime Shuttle is slightly cheaper at $58.96. I finally decided to phone Supershuttle to get the exact amount and was quoted $64. I think part of the problem is that people refer to the San Pedro pier but he says Long Beach pier is not the same one.

You can take the Metro 232 bus from LAX's lot C to downtown Long Beach (Broadway and Pine) for about $1.25. The 232 line starts at the LAX Metro terminal, and ends in Long Beach. Might take an hour to hour and 15 minutes, but is very cost effective.
