Default 1st t1st timer Costa Maya, Cozumel, Key West

Hi , need some tour advice. Nervous newbie and figure it is best to book tours thru cruise line since unsure about what to expect. Are there shops etc right after you get off the boat if we want to walk around if we didnt do a tour or do you need transportation immediately at the ports ?
Any suggestions for these ports for first time? Any advice would be great as we are totally out of our comfort zone doing a cruise.

Costa Maya: Right off the pier is a large shopping area. There are also restaurants and and bars and a pool with a swim up bar. There is a beach area right there, but the day we were there there was trash all along the shore. We rented a golf cart ($15/hr) and drove to Majahual (sp) which is about 2 miles away. It a very rustic village with a nice beach. The only thing I didn't care for was the vendors were very pushy. We stayed there for a few hours and then drove a little further down the coast before heading back to the ship. This year we're doing the ship's tour to Uvero Beach. The other popular excursion is to the ruins. We travel with our children and had heard from others that while this was a fantastic trip, the bus ride was long and it was hot. We decided to to ourselves and everyone else a favor and not do that with the kids.

Cozumel: We spent the day at Chankanaab Park which was great. We did the Sea Lion Swim and the Sea Trek Helment Dive here and then just relaxed on the beach and did some snorkeling from the shore. The park is very clean, has restrooms, showers, lockers, restaurant and bars. They also have a botanical garden and Mayan ruin replica. We booked the Sea Trek excursion through the ship and the Sea Lion swim on our own. Chankanaab is very easy to get to on your own. A taxi should run you about $10 each way.

Key West - Take the train ride through town for a great informative tour (lasts about 2 hours).

Cozumel - Look at the posts on this website for a variety of good beach reports. Plan on visiting Paradise beach when I go here next month (first time/using reports on this website to choose this one). Shopping in town provides good prices on most everything; there's a Hard Rock Cafe is you want a T-shirt..

Agree also on the train ride in Key West. It's a great way to see the entire town. There is so much to see, you can't see it all in the time you are at port there.

There are some great restaurants, shops and museums. But if you take the train, you will see where you will want to go back to.

I go to Key West all the time, and I still haven't seen all there is to see.

Have a great time.

We just got back and thought I'd let everyone know that we didn't care for Uvero Beach at Costa Maya. While the beach itself was great with plenty of sun, shade, and beach chairs, the water wasn't good at all. Most all of the bottom was covered in sea grass. We really couldn't swim or snorkle. The beach at Majahual was much nicer.
