Default Cabo snorkeling on our own?

We will be on the Mexican Riviera late April 2006. Have read conflicing reviews, but it seems like Cabo is our best bet.
Seeking information on "do-it-yourself" versus ship excursions - Any suggestions?

I don't know what all your ports of call are but IMO, Cabo San Lucas offers better snorkeling than Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta. There are several tour companies that offer snorkeling tours from the Cabo San Lucas marina, where you will disembark the tender.

Most of the tour boats go to Bahia Chileno or Playa Santa Maria; both located along the "corridor", a few miles outside of town. Both spots can be easily reached by taxi or by bus. Snorkel equipment rental can be hit & miss at both locations (independent vendors who rent from their vehicles) so if snorkel gear is needed, would suggest an organized tour from the marina.

Puerto Vallarta is very easy to do a walking tour ... I used the one from Fodors, and it was fantastic ... it is the prettiest port, I think.

Mazatlan I've done hoseback riding, private tours out to the colonial villages and city tours. All of them were great.
