Default Rental car in Cozumel

Sorry for the double post (also in Excursions index - I didn't realize there was a Mexico forum)

Do we need to make arrangements in advance in order to rent a vehicle in Cozumel? I am thinking that will be difficult since we don't know where we will be docking/tendering. Anyone walked off and rented onsite without reservations?

Thanks!

Default rental car in Cozumel

Taxi is not an option. We are going to drive around the island. Anyone experience renting a car onsite at the pier without advance reservations??

Not to worry, there are plenty of rental cars at the pier and no reservations are needed. That being said, do not rule out a taxi. If you ask at the pier and get your prices down firm, you might find a cab to give you a private tour for near the same price without the hassle of driving yourself.

Thats what we do. They like to bargain so hire a driver and let him show you where the locals eat, swim and get a great tour. They will make beach stops for you also.

Thanks for your replies. We have returned from our cruise. We rented a car from LessPay (near the Punta Langosta). We rented a jeep and drove all around the island. Stopped wherever we wanted at beach bars, etc. Great fun and very, very easy to do! LessPay was the easiest rental I have ever had in a foreign country. $60 for a jeep including tax, full insurance and everything.

It is a good solution to get insurance...Cozumel can be tricky and there are sometimes up to 8 ships in port and many people, many vehicles...there are also websites to book your car in advance for less trouble...

Question for anyone of you who has rented from the Lesspay place- Did you have to take a taxi to the rental place? If so, how much did the taxi ride cost? Thanks!

Here a recommendation...rent a vehicle (always with insurance), take the "transversal" which means the road towards the ├Âthee side of the island, make if you want a stop at San Gervasio Mayan Ruins, or the tequila tasting ranch (on the way)...have a drink at "Mezcalitos", the first bar arriving on the "other" side, continue for lunch at "Coconuts" (great ambiance and view...supposingly the highest point of Cozumel) or "Chen Rios" for fish specialities....take a look at "Punta Sur" park or "Chankanaab".....take an apero at dzul ha and return to downtown for returning your vehicle...then may vivist Carlos & Charlies for more fun and drinks...after driving. Remember in town, streets paralell to the sea have right, the others stop with some exceptions...take time and caution.....good luck!
