What does everyone like to do here? I've been to the Costa Maya port once, and was too lazy (maybe drunk) to get into town, but would really like to this time in July. I hear the beach is pretty nice in town and there are bars on the beach? Sounds perfect.

Mahahual downtown is a large beachfront area, nice beaches, good swimming and many bars and restaurants. Try some grilled fish filet or "ceviche" (fresh fish and seafood cocktail)...great place to forget about the rest
There is also a beach right next to the pier on the right side, you need to take a taxi around a fence and is nice as well, good food and a nice little private beach...

We have been here many times and usually go out to the fishing village by taxi and spend the day on the beach. Is the beach next to the pier public or private?

It is a private beach called Chac Chi. Authentic Mex beach restaurant...fish n seafood are good fresh local specialities..always a good way to go. It is private but no admission, just consumption..guaranteed a great day. Good luck!
