The Caribbean is far better suited for diving than Puerto Vallarta or anything on the West Coast. The water is colder (fewer reefs) and the whole habitat is just different.
There are probably places to do good dives around PV if you do your research first. I am not a diver...
The only thing I've heard about diving along Mexico's west coast is that it's supposed to be cold from about October to April or May. I checked with dive shops in the Austin, Texas and Dallas, Texas areas; they recommended dry suits for this time of year. For that reason and because I'm taking a non-diving lady friend to the Mexican Riviera, I've decided to remain a land-lubber when I cruise later this month.
