Tulum Excursion

Hi, I'm new to the board and my family is fairly new to cruising (I was on one 25 years ago).

I have a question about the Tulum excursions. RCI has two of them. One is 8 hours long and one is 6 1/2 hours long. We're taking our two kids (10, 12) and I was wondering which one would be better. Both kids are very good travelers but they ARE kids. The 12 year old loves all things history so I'm sure he wouldn't mind the length.

Does anyone know the difference between the two trips?

I would take the shorter one. Two reasons, first depending on when you go, it is extremely hot at the ruins. These ruins are not ones you can climb on so the shorter tour should quench your history thirst just fine. Secondly, unless the longer one includes time on the beach just below the ruins, it will probably take you to a Tanzanite store as part of the tour. Not a real good place to shop in my opinion. I did enjoy the ruins and hope you and your family will as well.

Thanks Reverendjeff. I think the longer one does include the beach. But it sounds like the shorter tour would be just about right. We're going in mid February so I think it shouldn't be as hot.

I think they both spend about the same time at the ruins...the longer one simply includes some beach time and the shorter one allows some shopping back in Cozumel...

This particular beach is pretty special. One look down at it from the ruins, and you WILL want to visit it.

Sounds like the longer one is the way to go. I can get the kids to do almost anything if there's eventually a beach involved. And if we book it through the cruise line they have to wait for us, right?

Last year we did the Tulum and XelHa Excursion, it was a really nice combo trip, well worth it although you do not spend as much time as we wanted at both places, but still a great experience

I understand this post is a bit old, but figured it might be able to provide some good info for future travelers. The cruise excursions usually are overpriced and don't offer the best the local ports have to offer.

Most cruises that come close to Tulum either stop in Cozumel or Calico. If you want to explore the best thing to do is catch a ferry to the main land, and then contract some local tours.

Edventure tours offers some good tours and includes Tulum. I specialize on custom tours. Riviera Maya has so many different things to do, that is hard for me to decide what my clients should visit, hence I give them the options and let them decide what works best for them.

Tulum for example is great combined with www.Tankah.com.mx or with Dos Ojos cenotes.
