I will be on the Golden Princess in October and was wondering about auto rental in Halifax, Bar Harbor and Newport. My friend and I like the idea of taking off to explore. Does anyone know if a car can be rented near the pier in each of these places? I've heard that auto rental in Bar Harbor is available at the airport....12 miles from the pier. I'd appreciate any information. Thanks! : )
I will be on Brilliance 10/22 similar itinerary as yours. I'm still trying to find out the answers, but here is what I gathered so far on rental car information for Bar Harbor and Halifax.
Rented a car through Budget for Bar Harbor and it's available at the airport. Not sure if there is a shuttle service or not. Airport does not seem like far from the pier. We will most likely take a cab to the airport if no shuttle available.
Rented a car through Hertz for Halifax and they told me that shuttle service ends on 10/15 and they suggested that we take a short taxi to Nova Scotia Casino Hotel where their counter is.
Still checking on Saint John, Sydney, and Portland, Maine.
I too will be going on the Golden princess but it is next week Sept 21st sailing
anyway I have a reservation for a Hertz rental car in Newport RI.
my guesstimate is that its less than a mile to their lot.
There is a bus system in
newport that goes by the rental office and on there web site it said they would
reinburst up to $4.oo for a taxi to their office with, A receipt of course.
But I had also read they do pickups but I haven't called yet to confirm this information
which I will need to do real real soon. as far as I can tell there are only two car rental
offices in the newport area and Hertz is the closest to where we tender
If you are a AAA Member you can get a descent discount also. Well hope this helps
I hope you have a wonderful time on your cruise!

In Bar Harbor you won't need a rental car.... the town is very quaint with everything in walking distance. To tour Acadia National park, I recommend using the tour rides, such as the horse drwn rides, at least to do the "loop" road. The road is very winding, and everyone travels slow, there is also so much traffic it would seem you were in NYC.
There is an LLBean outlet store in Ellsworth, about 8 miles up the road, if you like outlet shopping.
