Default Help me pick a New England cruise........

I have been on two cruises before. The Grand Princess to Eastern Caribbean 2000. It was very nice. I liked the 24 hour restaurant and thought the room service food was great. We had a stateroom with a balcony that was lovely. It was about $1,800 per person with air included. Not bad!

The 2nd cruise was on Celebrity's Infinity, inside passage to Alaska 2003. Beautiful ship, a little bit better service, but they were limited as to when and were one could eat. Personally, I thought Princess had better food. We also had a stateroom with a balcony. It was smaller than Princess and cost more. But, then there was the better service and amenties. So, to me its a toss-up between Celebrity and Princess?

Okay, I am considering New England/Cananda as my next cruise. Perhaps this summer. I am very open to a new cruise line experience. Just me and a male friend going. Old people and kids don't bother us. My friend really wants Alaska, but being that I was just there I want to try something else. I am hoping that Canada/New England is equally beautiful?????

So, an itinerary you all suggest? Or cruise line? Is Carnival that bad? It sounds like the food is good on Carnival. ( I admitt that is a biggy with me....such I am such a picky eater.) We also love gambling....slots especially. But, I really HAVE to have access to food 24 hours a day. That was great about Princess' Horizon Court. Do any of the other lines have a 24 hour restauarnt. I know they all have 24 hour room service. So maybe there is a line with a great room service menu. FOOD and GAMBLING....my main reasons to cruise. Also, I like more days at sea than ports. Wierd, I know!

Any ideas? I mean between, Princess, Carnival, HAL and RC, I have no idea where to begin. The other cruises were easy to plan, but for some reason I am just stuck with this one?

Thanks

Last year we took a Carnival cruise to Eastern Canada, with stops in St. John, NB and Halifax, NS. It was only 5 nights, but we had a great time. I would like to do the trip again over 10 nights, as I've seen a lot of longer itineraries that include stops in Maine, Rhode Island, etc. We picked this particular cruise because it was on a brand new ship (Carnival Miracle) and we got a VERY good deal.

It was our first time on Carnival, and we were happy with it. I'm very interested in food and cuisine, and I found the food on Carnival to be good-very good. There was nothing on the menu that I disliked, although some of the dishes were good, and others were stand-outs. The soups were especially good, and the lobster was very tasty. (Althought nothing could beat the whole fresh lobsters we had for lunch in Halifax!) Food WAS available 24 hours, including a pizza stand/area and room service. There was a midnight buffet one night.

The gambling was pretty good. The casino was very large, and had a variety of games/slots. Our room was pretty large as well. I would reccommend considering Carnival in the mix for this itinerary.

If you can go in Sept-Oct take Celeb. Constellation from NYC--it was really one of the best cruises we ever took!

We are on the Golden Princess 100105 to New England/Canada - this will be our 3rd trip and you will love it...the scenery is absolutely beautiful - we saw most of the color in Bar Habor. Our favorite ports were Bar Harbor and Halifax. We rented a car in Halifax in 2003 and drove out to Peggy's Cove and stopped for a nice lunch along the road headed back to town. This year we have decided to rent a car in both Halifax and Bar Harbor..

Whatever you do, you will have a wonderful cruise!!

We are trying Carnival for the first time on 9/17 from NYC with stops at Boston, Portland, Halifax and Sydney, NS (7 days). The Carnival Triumph is billed to be the biggest casino on the water, . I do love the food on Princess, but just to try something different, we are going Carnival this time.

We are taking Holland America's Maasdam to Canada @ New England because the Maasdam embarks out of Norfolk, which is close to home. This is a nine day cruise with stops in Boston, Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Quebec City and Montreal. One of the reasons why we pick a particular cruise is the itinarary and where the ship embarks from. Having to pay for airfare rountrip plus at least one night in a hotel can really add to the expense of the cruise! Of all the cruise lines we have tried, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity, we prefer Celebrity. Had Celebrity had a cruise embarking from Norfolk, we would have booked with Celebrity.

Celebrity's Constellation 13-night cruise. It was the best cruise I had been on.

I'm going to book it again for Sept/Oct 2006 if they will offer Martha's Vineyard and Maine as well. Just loved that cruise.

We are going to NE/CAN Sep 5 on CCL Triumph. This is our 4trip on this itin. The last 2 were in Oct 03/Sep 04. Our first time there was also in Sep. I love fall weather and the whole NE/Can area and would rather go there than to the hotter{weather wise}spots. I dont know about a balcony cabin though. It depends on when you go. We had one for our Oct trip{we were upgraded} and we used it about all of 15mins the entire cruise{4days} . It was way too cold and windy. Next time we decided to save some money and got just the outside cabin. This time we are going with inside{got a great deal}. As long as I am on the ship I dont usually care where I stay. Heck my husband and I had bunk bed rooms on CCL to the Bahamas once and I must admit it was huge considering. Than again CCL does have the largest cabins per square footage than other major lines. Also CCL Triumph does boast it is the largest casino afloat. Being on its sister ship Victory already ,I do agree.
I have been on most the major cruise lines{RCL, CCL,PRIN,NCL,CEL,} and can say for the money all cruise lines give a good deal. I willsay that service wise there is a diffrence. Not that I had bad service on any cruise line it was just diferent with each cruise line. I put the cruise lines by service in this order Celb,Prince, NCL, RCL,CCL. Now I am not saying CCL was bad{this is our 4th time trvling on them}but it is not the same. For ex: Our first 3cruise were with NCL and Celb, the waiter/busboy was always around at our table and held my seat out and put the napkin on my lap. By the 3rd night they know that I always drank ice tea and made sure it was there without me having to ask and always refilling it as soon as I took 2 or 3sips. Our next cruise after those was on CCL and the waiter most nights held my chair out If he wasnt busy and if I myself didnt put the napkin on my lap{which I didnt for I know they will do that} then he would get around to it. As for drinks I had to ask everynight for my ice tea and refills. Did I let that bother me or make me have a bad cruise,no, Am I being a snob ,no -I knew CCL was a bit more "casual" in that dept and delt with it. One couple who went with us on Celb didnt like it. They felt is was a bit stuffy-they thought CCl was much better. It really depends on you and what you are expecting. If you go with the flow I dont think you will be disapointed. I think all cruise lines take care of thier guest equally, some just go a little more. {Look at the prices for a CCL cruise and lets say a NCL to the same destanation and days trvl ;NCL will be higher 98% of the time} I would love to go on Cunard QM or QE2{they treat you like royalty}but you pay 3 times more for a 3day cruise to nowhere than a 7-10day cruise on another line{I checked}. If you want "fine"service CCL is good, If you would want/ "finer"service I would say RCL ,if you want "finest" I would stick w/Princ,Celb{NCL is out for they only have freestyle dinning} If you dont mind one way or the other take a chance and try a diffrent cruise line. Thats what we do.
As for food 24hrs -CCL I think is the best-They have the pizza and burger stand always open{the pizza was ok-but coming from NYC I am spolied}and for room service you could get almost anything they serve. Plus they have the ice cream machine that is always open as well. I dont eat alot at one sitting{unless its dessert} but I like to pick thruout the day and CCL does make it more possable than other lines.

Hope this helps-Good Luck !

JC

If you've cruised other lines, I think you'll be disappointed in Carnival. The food is good, but that's all. Outside the dining room, you'll be lucky if anyone on the crew talks to you civilly. Smiles - what are those? Entertainment is mediocre at best. I like to cruise, but never again on Carnival.

Agree with hcat the Constellation cruise last Sept was great. However any C/NE cruise that includes Quebec City and the Saguenay River will be one you will not forget. A big plus on the Constellation was that it included overnight in Quebec City. It allowed us to take a tour of the Laurentians and still have plenty of time to explore the Old and New Quebec. Our first C/NE cruise was From Montreal to New York on the Regal Princess. The cruise up and down the Saguenay is magnificent and not to be missed.

I just read your original post again, & noticed you have been to Alaska, & that your friend wants to go to Alaska. Believe me, the New England/Canada cruise will not be anywhere near the Alaska experience. I have done both, & there is no comparison. Do your friend (& yourself) a favor - go to Alaska! I can't wait to get back there myself. But it has to wait until after my next adventure - Egypt.

We love the Canada new England itinery. We have sailed doing this itinery with Cunard,
NCL, HAL Maasdam. Tomorrow we are booking it again on the new NCL ship "Jewel" which debuts in August. WE liked Maasdam very much but have deicded to try a newer ship. Last time with NCL it was a much older ship, the Norwegain Sea .
We have not done the Alska cruise so can;t comment on it. We love this east coast run.
We enjoy the time spent in Quebec city whcih is spectacular , real old world European. It is North America's only walled city. You can actually walk the wall. The old part of the city is full of wonderful history. There is an upper and lower city accessed via a funicular
railway car . Where the ships dock here is a wonderful Battle of the Atlantic museum whcih is really worth seeing. Each time we have cruised the Saguenay river, we have seen whales so ver close to the ship. It is beautiful area. Halifax is also gret. Lovely harbourfront areas to simply walk along or you can take one of the many tours offered.
I love Bar Harbour maine and if that is on the itinery, greta! I also love Bostonl and the Faneuil market area and the Freedom walk.
I hope that helps. You may already have made your decision. by now but felt I wanted to add to the posting.
history.

If you have time and money, Celebrity Constellation 13-night Canada/New England is fabulous.

I cruised it last October and I'm waiting to book it again for next Fall. I don't usually repeat cruises, but this one is one I am waiting to do again.
