We took our second trip on the Dream, this one to the Baltic capitals, last September and just loved it. We take no shore excursions - overpriced and we prefer to do it on our own. In each city there are "on and off" busses with the exception of St. Petersburg. Because we chose not to get a visa, we did take their city tour and found it very good. These busses usually come right to the boat - one criticism I did have of NCL was the fact that on inquiring about the bus in Copenhagen, the staff (twice) denied that there was any such service when, in fact, it was right outside. Buy your tickets there at the Chamber of Commerce on the pier. Those shops, by the way, are as good as any shopping we saw in the city. Save money for Estonia as the baltic sweaters they sell there in the city for $30 are fantastic.Loved the "freestyle" and had no problems being seated except for the last night. We ate with large groups every night and really enjoyed meeting all these people. We were on the Atlantic deck (same room as when we did European trip year before) and found room to be adequate, clean and room steward was great. As we did our own air, bought ground transportation from NCL and it worked out perfectly. Hope you have a great trip and if you have other questions, don't hesitate to get back to me. Mary

Thanks for the great info..In the limited info gathering I have done I have found local do it yourself tours..St Petersburg is my dilemma..on one hand I want to set up my own tours but I am a little hesitant..Was the tour with NCL expensive..what were the comments from folk that took them as i am sure there were several. mary wrote:

Mary, Thanks so much for your comments on the NCL cruise to the Baltic. We have previously cruised with Rennaisance and had a great time. We have read that the NCL Dream is quite crowded and that the food is not good. We had read complaints about Rennaisance but found Ren to be nearly perfect. We mourn their demise. Your note indicates that NCL might be as good as Ren.

By the way, our experience with Carnival was not good.
