Fred, I have, but usually you will know prior to sailing, sometimes by the time you get your docs you will have been assigned a cabin. We have done the guarentee thing several times, only really back fired once. There have been a couple of times when we did not know until we reached the pier. I don't think I would do it again cause of the one bad experience, but for many it's the way to go and if you are a gambler you may hit the jackpot. Good luck, NMNita
We did the guarantee thing on RCL two years ago...paid for the lowest class inside cabin and ended up with a nice outside cabin, sort of in the stern, so it was smooth and that engine noise lulled you right to sleep. I think we got upgraded like 6 levels. We're going on a Holland America Caribbean cruise at Thanksgiving and decided to try out luck with a guarantee again. We'll see how it turns out.
Becky, that's the chances. A few years ago I booked my daughter, my 2 grand daughtes and myself in 2 cabins (RCL) not guaranteed, about the mid price for outside cabins. At the same time I booked another gal and her 3 daughters in 2 inside guarenteed lowest price cabins. They ended up on the top deck, outside. Just never know do we. Good luck to you and keep us posted when you return. I am just too nervous anymore after our experience. Well we did do guarantee last January, but it was guarentee outside and not lower cat. We got upgraded for level I think. No biggy.
Well, it's not like we took the BIG plunge... We booked a really nice grade of inside cabin (Holland America's "K") and did a guarantee booking. We figure we won't do any worse than a decent inside cabin, and might get lucky. I won't mind if we get an inside cabin...you're hardly ever there anyhow!
I've always enjoyed the suspense. It can be a little disappointing if I end up in a low category cabin, but it's always fun thinking of the money I'm saving.
