We are leaving Sunday for our cruise on the Norwegian Dream out of New Orleans. Would like to hear from recent cruisers. What was your experiences? How was the weather? Any good tips to remember?

Thanks, -Jim

I was on the Dream in Feb. A really nice cruise. The ship's layout is kind of strange. The food in the main dining rooms was mostly good. It's a little cramped but the service was very good. The buffetts were not as nice as the ones on the Sky. Had great sushi in the sports bar 2 nights. We had an outside cabin w/window on deck 5. It had a little sitting area that was very nice. Storage was good.

The first and last days at sea can be rough. Take dramamine with you even if you don't usually get sick. It was very cool at first, but warms up when closer to Mexico. We really enjoyed the 4X4 jeep adventure in Cozumel. It included lunch at a nice beach and a drink at Senor Frogs when finished. Still had time to shop. We managed to dock at the pier closest to town. Didn't need a cab.

Tendered at Roatan because Carnival was at the pier. After they left Dream was able to dock. Did the sailing yacht adventure. Not really worth it and a long day. We saw nice beaches from the "yacht". Would have preferred to spend the day there or stay on board. Island is beautiful away from the town (which is kind of scary).

Did Shark/Ray Alley snorkle and beach in Belize. 1.5 hour rough boat ride. Snorkle sight was out in the open sea near a reef. Great snorkling for those who can manage choppy water and windy conditions. Then went to Ambergris Caye for lunch at a "resort". It was kind of a hole in the wall. Too windy at beach. Too hot to shop in town which was a 15 minute walk. Not a terrible day, but very long and tiring. Again I could have stayed on board and worked on my tan.

Cancun is probably a great resort destination. It doesn't seem to make a good cruise destination. Took 35min tender to dock. Only to get on another boat for 45 min to Isla Mujeres to Avalon Bay Beach and Shopping trip. Do not go on this. The hotel is not prepared for so many guests-not enough loungers, beach is too small. None of the non-motorized sport equipment worked. Did get free Margaritas and Beer. I personally tried to get my money's worth out of the beer-as the drinks were watered down. Again I could have stayed on the ship.

The reason I did not stay on the ship is because my husband is Senor Go Go Go! Which is not the fault of the cruise line. I did have a great cruise because the ship was very well run and clean and had great things to do on board. Do not miss the Power of One if they are performing. Say hi to DJ Rommel and Bob if you see them. I swear to you I rarely saw a crew member who was not smiling. The pools are great-if you get to stay on board and use them. By the way, you cannot understand one word the Captain says. Even the crew agrees. Have a great time. Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks Amy. We are really looking forward to getting away from Buffalo this year. We had one of the top three coldest winters in history. We also had a lot more snow than usual. We have already decided that we are going to make the best of whatever we encounter on the trip and have a good time. It is nice to hear some of the tips that you wrote so we be prepared.

Hope you get this before you leave. My sister and I have just returned, March 7 from a cruise on the Dream. This is our second trip in six months on the same vessel. I don't know what you are looking for in a cruise, but we've never been disappointment with any cruise on NCL.

As far as I am concerned the ship is not my destination, but my means to a destination. I enjoy the fellow passengers that I meet and I love the crew members. They will do anything they can do to make your stay memorable. Don't be afraid to ask for something special. If it is withing their power it will be done. Special food, if it is in the stores, special preparation, etc. Remember it is your cruise and they are there to accommodate you if at all possible.

Dining experience - treated to unsurpassed attention in both the Sports Bar and at the Italian Restaurant Tratora. If you go to the Tratora, ask for Ancel Harris' location. You will not be disappointed with the service and if the food is not done to your liking Mr. Harris will make sure you are satisfied.

Sports Bar - there are several young people there, but specifically Andrea from Latvia and Dragisha (where he is from I am not sure) but they will both do there best to accomondate you. The Assistant Matrie D is Andrew Ancog, USA and he is on between 3-12.

Sports Bar - bar waitress Danellia from Romania I believe and she will remember you, what your drink preference is and will take good care of you.

Four Season's - they have a new waiter there by the name of Alexander Sinillil - Estonia. He will see that everything is to your liking in that restaurant.

Piano _outside Coffee Bar - pianist is Ernie Scott. Great singer and pianist. Say hello from "Summertime", I always asked him to sing and play that for me.

They have an Internet Cafe, library, casino, shopping deck (10), you won't even know if there are children aboard as they have their own location. Health spa, beauty spa

As I said previously we sailed with this ship to Canada/New England in October of last year. Weather did not really cooperate, hit with two hurricanes, however even though we could not get into Halifax the ship activities keep us going.

We can't control the weather or circumstances, but we can make the best of a less than perfect siutaiton. In conclusion I will say ENJOY your travel companion(s), ENJOY the rest and relaxation, ENJOY the people you meet, both fellow passengers and crew . . . just ENJOY.

If you see any of the above mentioned crew members, say "HI" from the sisters, hopefully we will see them all soon as we are planning on doing the DREAM again when it has been refurbished the end of this year.

Hopefully I do not have to put a "disclaimer" on this, judge for yourself as only you know what you are looking for on a cruise or for that matter an vacation.
Also want to let you know, for the type of cruising we like NCL is the best, we've done Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Carnival, we keep going back to NCL.

Don't let anyone or any situation (such as weather - rather be safe than sorry) disappoint you. We could not get into Cancun because of rough seas, but we made an additional day at sea more enjoyable by being with people that made it so.

Thanks for your reply and the many names that I jotted down. I am always amazed at how the staff remembers people from previous cruises and it makes a nice "ice-breaker" to start a conversation.

We do plan on enjoying ourselves come what may on this cruise. It will be our first "Freestyle" cruise. This will be our first cruise on NCL since we were on the Norway in 1999. We debate each year on whether to cruise or go on a land vacation.

We have been going to the Dominican Republic for the past few years and love it. We thought that it was time to go back to cruising to see what we are missing.

Thanks again.
-Jim and Dotti.

Please let me know what you think of the Dream. It's not the newest, maiden voyage 1992, but it has improved with age. I forgot one very important name Kristi Vene in the Terrace Restaurant. I will be anxious to see how things went for you both.

We are also on the Dream on March 14. Leaving in the morning for New Orleans from Memphis.
There are lots of folks on the cruisecritic.com NCL roll call boards that are on this ship and we are all getting together to meet. You might want to check out that board.
As others who have replied to your e-mail have said, a cruise is what you make it. We have been very fortunate over 6 cruises to have had wonderful experiences each time. You just have to take the negatives and find something positive in it.
We have found the service, food and activities aboard 4 NCL ships to be just fine. Sure, some food as much to our liking as other, so we just ask for something else and they always bring it with a smile.
Have a great cruise and maybe we will see you on board.
