First I have to say, this was my second trip on the Dawn, did last year out of Miami. Weather was terrible, we got to Florida it was about 71 and very windy, Miami wasn't any better, we by passed the private island seas were to rough ( really rough) and went directly to Nassau, where there were 25 mile an hour winds. they made the decision the next morning not to go to private island, tenders would not run in rough seas. That night was a real trip, really rough, I did not see one person sick, the children on the ship seemed to take it all in stride. We spent two days at sea coming home. Now for the good part. Embarkation and Debarkation were as smooth as it could ever go. The food was fine, I did find that the Aqua Restaurant which is staffed only by girls was not as nice as the others. The girls seemed to have little attitudes. We dined mostly in the Venetian, we found the waiter that we had last year, and we had impeccable service. He catered to our every whim. On Lobster night they also had filet w/bernaise sauce, so our waiter made sure we dined on surf and turf. We tipped him extra because he deserved it.
I did have one small problem, which was not resolved, which I believe I will take up directly with NCL, I won a prize in a game show of a free excursion to the parrot jungle, unfortunately I was already booked on airboat ride and the excursion desk would not give me credit for the booked excursion. Apparantly they are run by separate entities. The assistant cruise director told me the excursion desk would work with me and they would not. They told me I should have given the ticket away to someone. I find that absurd. Also bingo is still expensive on the Dawn, more so than any other cruise line, so if bingo is your game be prepared to spend money. The casino was very good to us, won a few bucks there. All in all in spite of the weather we had a good time, the Dawn is a beautiful ship and it is very well maintained. Any questions I'd be happy to answer. One more thing in November the Dawn is going to sail out of NY and go East, with stops in St thomas, St John, Barbados, Grenada and I believe Tortola, 2 days at sea out and back, it is a 10 day itinerary. I think I am going to try it. Happy Cruising Everyone.
The weather was bad only in the way that it wasn;t warm as it should have been, or perhaps I hoped it would be. Some people stay on the ship in spite of the weather good or bad, but we had a tour planned and most people did get off and go on their respective tours. It was a little chilly and windy, we went to the cape so no problem. Its a very good tour. Miami was also cool but it didnot rain, everyone I believe went on their tours, we took the everglade ride and then the bus dropped us off at the Bayside Mall, great place, alot of cool shopping and lots of food not that we needed any. Then there is a bus that runs every half hour back to the ship. Everything is very well organized. The only day they planned extra actitivities was the extra day at sea. There is enough going on that you can find something to do. WE saw several movies, although I never really invisioned myself going to the movies on a cruise ship, but they were newer movies, so I wanted to see them anyway, Master and Commander, Somethings Gotta Give, Love Acutally. As the weeks go on the weather will get better. I would guess that the cruise this week isn't much better. Happy Cruising.
His name was Dhuri and he was in the Venetian. Unfortunately, he will be leaving the ship in May and fllying to Hong Kong where he will be boarding the brand new Norwegian Spirit and going to Seattle, for Alaska cruises. He was a real nice kid and believe me it did make a difference.
I sure hope that by April 25th the weather will be much improved! How was the airboat ride in Miami? I'm planning to go on that w/my family. I have little ones they are 3 and 5
Is it too much for them to handle? Or am I going to be going crazy like an over protective mother with alligators?
The airboat ride was fine, when the driver of the boat sees a gator he slows down the boat and stops and feeds them so they come right up the boat. They are only interested in the marshmallows that they are being fed, not the passengers. I really enjoyed it, and afterwards they give a presentation of some animals that are on the verge of extinction, such as the florida cougar, some great big owl, and several other animals all the kids there seemed really to enjoy that. Don't be too overprotective, the kids will have a great time.
This might sound like a crazy question. What do they do if you hv to go to the restroom? Its a 4hr excursion and I got the little ones and a couple of seniors traveling w/me. Do they have everglade porta-potties?
Hi Slotaddict, I am so glad you had a nice time inspite of the weather. My daughters bouyfriends granparents were on the ship with you. He (the boyfriend) was telling me that the captain wanted to stay in the bahamas an extra day but the govern wanted 1200 a person..
I will be sailing on her in June for my very first cruise. I am so excited. I worry about the weather but I am hoping that in June the seas are a little bit calmer.
I checked out the cam for todays sailing of her and looks a little choppy leaving NY but we had nothing but rain rain and more rain all weekend. So hopefully they will get some nice weather the rest of the week.
How were the shows on board? I heard that Bingo was expensive. I wonder why? You would think they would charge so much so more people would play. Oh well.
This is our first time on the Dawn, going with four other families, April 18-25, canít wait. How is the kids program, do you know? Are the pay for restaurants worth it or are the nonpay ones good enough to eat at. Do they have special nights featuring different foods, such as lobster, steaks, mexican etc. How is the chocaholic buffet? How far in advance can you make your dinner reservations. How is the entertainment on the ship? Which excursions do you recommend? Thinking of SeaWorld and Miami Beach and I think that is it. Do they have anything for the kids on Formal night?. Sorry for so many questions, we just feel anxious about the trip. Any info you can give would be well appreciated. Thank You.
I've heard that the kids program is good. Here's hoping! The restaurants do have "theme" nights. I think the non-paying restaurants are just as good as the paying (unless you want a really good steak then pay the extra and go to Cagneys). The Garden Buffet, IMO, is very good - especially for breakfast. Chocoholic buffet is good but I thought it was better on the NCL Sea - on there they had fresh fruit on a stick that they dipped in the chocolate of your choice and on the Dawn they didn't have that but its chocolate so it was all good, nonetheless! : ) I recommend making dinner resv. at least 1-2 days prior to when you want to eat in that restaurant. You can make it that day but most likely they will only have late seatings (8pm and later). The excursions I did were Islands of Adventure in Orlando (love that park) and some cruise in Miami (can't remember the name of the cruise) where they show you all the celebrity homes along the water - that was alot of fun. In Nassau we did our thing (we had been there before so we were familar with the island) and you will love their private island. I highly recommend going snorkeling! And go out snorkeling between the rocks (you'll know what I mean when you get there) - its AMAZING out there!!!!!!
All I can say is we took this cruise in May 2003 and we are going again on the 18th so to make a long story short, we loved it and we are looking forward to it again. Have fun!!!!!!!
Believe me you would not believe how many people play. I have played on other ships and played everyday, but not on this one. You can play paper cards $ 29.00 or their electronic boards, which give you twice as many games $ 39.00. Somedays are two for one, other days they are playing special games and the board costs $ 60.00. I just think it is way to much. We only played a couple of days. On the last day which is the big jackpot, we went via the casino, hit for $ 1000.00 and never made it to bingo, which didn;t break my heart, I was happy. The shows were very good especially Bollywood. A couple of them we declined to go see because they were the same as last year. All in all very nice ship and a good time.
I don;t know much about the kids programs sorry. There is nothing special for the kids to do on formal night. We don;t do formal nights, we dress casual everynight. The last time we were on the Dawn, Thursday was lobster night, but this cruise it was on Friday.
There was also filet on the menu, so our waiter, combined it and we all had surf and turf. They claim Cagneys is excellent for Steak, but we never tried it. There is a Mexican restaurant, tex mex on the ship, they do an italian night. The food is good, not the best I truly believe Celebrity has the best food, but that is me and everyone has an opinion. I never thought I would cruise another line but the freestyle cruising, to me is just great.
Don't worry about the kids, I really didn;t see any kids having a bad time. The only excursions we did were cape kennedy and everglades. I really didn't even hear to much chatter about any of the excursions, although I did hear that the parrot jungle tour was a good one. You can make reservations a couple of days ahead of time, there are always girls sitting at a table in the atrium, where the excursion desk and reception desk are. There were no complaints that I heard of at all regarding reservations, or wait time for restaurants. I will say that the days the ships are at sea, the resturants seem a little more crowded. When the ship is in port I noticed that alot of people tend to stay in their shorts and eat at the buffet. Don't be apprehensive, its a beautiful ship plenty to do, food is good, shows are good. If you are with good company, you cannot help but have a good time.
