Default booking shore excursion on ship or wait and do it yourself?

Going on the NCL majesty out of Chaleston in March 2005. Been on several cruises mostly carnival and this is first norwegian. Was wondering what you think on booking shore excursion off the ship or not booking anything at any island and doing your own thing. Example: swimming with the dolphins book this from ship or go to park and book your own. We have a lot of first time cruisers going on this trip and since we have not booked from cruise line and waiting to do ex: dolphins on our own, not renting snorkle equipment but waiting until we got to park and rented our own. Havent been on a cruise in a while and was wondering what is best???

For the dolphin excursion I would book prior to going! When we went in Feb of last year, this one was sold out even before we boarded. It's a very popular one. The price is close to the same both ways. ( at least for the one in Cancun at the interactive aquarium) don't know about the others. We booked all ours in advance from home and when we got to our stateroom the tix were there waiting on us, so that made it nice not to have to stand in line at the shore excursion desk. So I guess if it is one of the more popular things to do I'd book early, ( you can always go to the excursion desk on board if you change your mind and either cancel an excursion ( there is a charge if you don't cancel/change it, I believe, 24 hours in advance.) or switch to something else.
They were great about immediatly crediting our OB acct for the difference in charges for a different excursion.

we just came off ncl-sun and booked our excursions on our own before we left. However, we did not do the dolphins excursion, we did cave tubing in Belize and a beach day in Roatan with snorkeling and lunch included. The prices were better and the groups were smaller. We were very happy with our choice to book ourselves and would probably do again on our next one (whenever that is). If you have your heart set on swimming with the dolphins, you may take a chance of it being sold out if you wait.
On two of the four ports, we didn't book anything and just ended up shopping in town for a while. I guess you need to decide how badly you want to go and if you want to risk the chance of getting closed out.
