NCL Corp., Aker Yards terminate deal to build ship
OSLO, Norway -- Shipbuilder Aker Yards reported the letter of intent to build a cruise ship for NCL Corp. has been terminated.
The yard and NCL Corp. had agreed in December to build a ship for the line’s Norwegian Cruise Line brand that would have all outside cabins with balconies, but in a brief statement Aker said “the parties have not been able to realize the project within the given constraints.”
NCL signed a contract earlier this year to build a vessel at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany.
I was at those final negotiations. Aker was not able to provide the level of technology we wanted on the ships for the price they had originally agreed to so we pulled the contracts for the 2 ships they were to build. We have given one of them to Meyer Werft and the other looks like it might go to Fincanteri. These are a very new and technologically advanced design that we are hoping will take the cruise world by storm just like the first of the "panamax" ships did.
