Default Norwegian Dawn - Need Opinions

Hi guys!!

Need some info here, considering doing a cruise next May out of NYC. Reading negative reviews / stories all over the place on this ship.

Anyone have serious issues with this particular ship itself (not the cruiseline itself, just the ship). Thanks!!

Need to know ASAP.

I was just on the Dawn end of May/early June.

Here's a link to an article I wrote about it
http://www.cruisemates.com/articles/...de/foodbev.cfm

I have no problem recommending the Dawn, and our trip on her was one of the reasons we chose her sister the ship, the Jewel, for one of our CruiseMates Group Cruises next year.

I don't know where you are reading negative "all over the place" as you put it. There isn't a ship in the water that you can't find negatives written about: here or on any other board, but saying "all over the place" tells me you have read zillions of bad reviews and nothing good. I poll was done recently on another site asking "what NCL ship is your favorite?" Overwelming the Dawn came out on top with almost everyone who had sailed her wanting to go on her again or they already had. some had been on her 4 or 5 times and she is only 4 years old. I haven't sailed the Dawn, but did sail her sister ship, the Jewel. Many on the Jewel actually liked the Dawn a little better. I don't know what else to say.

I will be going on the Dawn for my third time this October. It's a beautiful ship - no complaints at all!

Yeah, its not for me, its my nutty sister. Course, she Googled Norwegian Dawn Reviews, would up over at Cruise *******'s website & saw the reviews there which apparently wasn't too hot & figures the worst.

I explained not everyone agrees with everyone, different tastes, attitudes, etc.

Unfortunately, NY doesn't have a large amount of choices for cruises/cruise lines compared to say Florida. So, now she's rethinking of going out of FL or PR. (sigh....siblings).

How many times have the two of you cruised and what are you looking for? I will say one thing: cruising out of PR does offer the best ports. Just thought I would throw that in to confuse the issue even more.

Tell her she can email anyone of us and we will show her where to find zillions of positive reviews. The only place I can think of that may have many negatives is Tripadvisor, which always has more negatives than positives. I almost lost 2 or 3 sales because of reviews on Tripadvisor. Luckily I was able to switch cliants to something else. These were not all cruises. A couple of them were all inclusives. One of my own daughters (the worry wart in the family) kept changing her mind about where to stay in Cancun area because of Tripadvisor.

As a TA I read as many reviews as I can handle and just haven't seen many bad ones about the Dawn. This doesn't mean there have been none, certainly there have been some.

Hope this helps a little,

Nita

Sailed on the Dawn twice. She is a lovely ship that made her debut in Dec of 2002. She is still considered new and I loved the freestyle. Give it try!

I could not have had a better time on the Dawn. Friendly staff and abudnant restaurants for freestyle dining. The only negative were the shows just weren't any good.

If you want to try NCL no better ship then the Dawn. I have been on the Dawn 5 times with two more cruises booked.

No other ship in the fleet is rated higher on customer feedback forms

No other ship in the fleet has more repeat cruisers many over 15 times in 4 years she has been sailing (first cruise Dec 2002)

Many have never cruised on any other NCL ship.

My wife and I just returned from a cruise on the Dawn on August 19, 2006. We have taken approximately 35 cruises and this one was among the top three. Why? The ship is beautiful. The food and service is outstanding. The entertainment on board is well above average. The cruise director, Jimmy, is the BEST. Plus, Freestyle Cruising is a big plus for us...it is nice to be able to eat dinner when you wish. We are somewhat picky and we never found a thing to complain about on the Dawn. Oh, one other thing... NCL has a fabulous program for children on the Dawn. We found out near the end of our cruise that there were several hundred chilren on board but we never knew it. They were busy doing their own thing in the children's program as opposed to running wild all over the ship. This last point may not be a consideration now that school is back in session.

Well just add me to the list of those who truly love the Dawn. We are booked again this spring. I was never thrilled about their entertainment but it's not terrible either. It's OK and OK was OK with us because everything else was superb!

Add us to the list of those who love the Dawn and (had she not moved to NY) would have cruised on again, and again, and again. Nothing against NY but since we live in So. Fla, who wants to fly up north to cruise to the Bahamas? We'll cruise her again when she moves back "home" to Miami -her original port. You'll love her!

Add me to the list of Dawn lovers. I just came back from a one nighter. I did it because I missed the Dawn so much. I have two favorite ships and she is one of them.

We're sailing the Dawn on 11/25/06. This is our second time on the Dawn. We have no complaints. The food was good. The entertainment was amusing and the accomodations were more than we expected. Come with a good attitude and you'll have a great time.

She has booked the cruise for May 07. She is really excited. My next question to you guys is this:
what excursions are on this trip? The NCL website is not too helpful.
She is interested in shopping, snorkeling & scuba diving - but has only done it once before.
Parasailing would good as well.

Also, What is good to see in Bermuda and Bahamas? What are the hot spots that people dont know about????
Anything you can tell me she'd appreciate.

I forgot something else - what is the deal with the dinners? The specialty rest. Someone told me that if you go early, it's cheaper? Any truth to that? What is the cost of the rest. on the Dawn?

Hi Cassandra,

From the NCL site:

Quote:
What about Shore Excursions?

Click here to view the available Shore Excursions. An updated listing of Shore Excursions are available approximately 3 months prior to the first sailing of each cruise destination season. If you are booked on a cruise, a Shore Excursions brochure and pre-request form will be mailed to you with your cruise documents. Some tours are available to pre-request online, or you may fax the completed pre-request form to 1-305-436-4110. Once onboard, Shore Excursions can also be purchased at the ship's Shore Excursion Desk.
So, while she can look at the currently available shore excursions, she should wait until her ship has it's shore excursions posted.

I can't answer your question about the specialty restaurants for sure, but I think, from reading the boards, that there's a discount on the first night.

Nita????

We really loved our cruise on the Dawn. I recommend you to go to Salsa, the mexican restaurant. We really loved the food there. Go early during the cruise so that you can go back there again if you like it! (No cover charge)

Enjoy your cruise!

Default Just got back from my cruise on the Dawn yesterday

I am back from my cruise and as promised, I wanted to let you know how things went.

In a word, Great!

We had cruised on the Spirit in June and seen the Dawn in the pier when we retrurned and decided that we would try it if we could.

I found it to be a great ship and very similar to the Spirit in layout and amenities. They share some of the same restaurant names and the menus seemed to be very familiar.

The quality of the food was excellent and service was a bit better. We actually had some of the senior staff approach us at our tables and give us their business cards and tell us to call if we had any problems.

I will leave some other postings on specific issues later.

I've sailed the Dawn once and leave on it again in three weeks. If you want upscale sailing, you need to try another line, but the Dawn is solid for the value. Everything I ate was good, if not great. The cabin was a nice size and the entertainment was ok. I have no complaints.

My wife & I sailed the Dawn out of New York for the New England Cruise earlier this fall.
I give the Ship LOW scores for comfort, beds, noisy cabinits in our stateroom, so much noise I could not sleep at night.
the food was not good at all except in the 2
Steakehouses they were delightful. The Casino was sooo Slow, the dealers were really inexperirenced.
Overall experirence on this ship was about a 6 out of 10
We will not be chosing NCL again anytime soon.

We totally loved the Dawn as well!!! There were 15 of us from age 2-65, and everything clicked from the cabins, the restaurants and even the entertainment that we all found something for all of us to enjoy! Our crew was fantastic and you couldn't ask for a better introduction to cruisin' that the Dawn had to offer. We had cruised from NYC just before Christmas (Dec 11 2005) and the shipwas decorated to the nines for the holidays. It was a great way to get relaxed for Christmas! I don't think that you will find too many that didn't enjoy the Dawn experience no matter where it take them.
