We might be going on the Spirit sometime in April next year, most likely the 15th, it'll be the first cruise for any of the people going. How is it? I hear some people say it's good, some say it's bad, some say it's good for the money. What's true? What was good/bad about it? Thanks.
The ship is gorgeous, crew is extremely friendly and cabins are nice. The food left a bit to be desired (I posted my food review on another thread). We would not hesitate to sail on the Spirit again, although I'd like to try the Dawn also.
Thanks popsec, What do you mean the food left a bit to be desired? It wasn't Mcdonalds quality was it? Please tell me it's not that bad.
I was surprised by the fact that they didn't keep the food on the buffet at a warmer temperature. It looked like there were usually a couple fish selections and pork or beef but the meat always seemed dried out, tough and barely lukewarm. After cruising on Carnival and Celebrity, NCL's buffet was a big letdown. I'm not a picky eater and we seldom eat out at home. I've always said that you can always find something to eat at a ship's buffet but on an 11 day cruise I got tired of eating the hambugers and spaghetti just to get a hot meal. The deli station had a nice selection of meats and rolls but you have to ask the woman to put more meat on...it was always just a couple tiny slices when she made the sandwiches.
It's coming across like I'm a major complainer but the food was my only complaint on this cruise. If you've never sailed the other cruise lines, it may seem perfectly fine to you.
Although we were on the Sun, not the Spirit, I'll agree with popsec. The food in the dining room was fine, but the food at the buffet was almost inedible. We're not "picky" either, but "hot" foods were not even close to "hot", which made me worry about how safe the food might be .
The first day there was a "BBQ" which appeared to have been cooked at least the day before and reheated. It was so bad that we dumped it in the garbage and went to the dining room!
The hamburgers were good, but we didn't want them every day. We like McDonald's and would have enjoyed their menu !
Like popsec, we enjoyed the cruise, but the food left something to be desired. We'd still cruise NCL, but we'd be more "particular" about where we ate !

My husband and I just sailed the Spirit on Sept. 30th. We were more than a little dissapointed. Most of crew were not friendly. The food in the buffet was awful-we only ate there once or twice. The food in Windows was mostly ok-small portions-my husband asked for seconds more than once. Cagney's, Le Bistro and Teppanyaki were great. We enjoyed each dinner at the the specialty restaurants. We sailed with 10 other couples. A few couples and ourselves as well noticed a sewage odor coming from the bathroom several times. One of the women we sailed with would cough and feel ill when in her cabin and would be fine when on deck or in a public room. They tried to get their cabin changed but the ship was full. On return she went to her own doctor and he said she now had a respiratory infection that required antibiotic that very well could have been caused by the odor in the cabin. We sailed the Dawn also and that ship was wonderful! The crew, food, everything was great! I would sail the Dawn again but not the Spirit.
We took the Sprit on our first ever cruise July of '06, and were very happy with it. The only thing we really didn't like at the buffet was their Mexican, it was the worst. Everything else was more than satisfactory, and all of the meals in Windows were outstanding...
We just returned today from 12 days on the Spirit. This was the 5th time we sailed NCL and have always been happy. We've always enjoyed the freestyle experience, but this was the first cruise where I was so glad to get off the ship. I've never heard so many complaints during one cruise.
Look for a lengthly review at a later date.
Just a quick overview: The food tempature was never hot - especially the dining rooms (both Windows and the Garden Restaurant). The speciality restaurants don't hold a candle to the specialty restaurants on the Dawn.
The spa (or lack of one) was terrible. This is one thing that I look forward to on each cruise.
Much of the crew appeared to be new because many who were assigned to the dining rooms didn't have a clue about the menu or where tables were located.
There were rarely clean towels around the pool. Chairs weren't the problem but towels were.
My suggestion is try another ship. The Dawn is a beautiful ship and she would be my first choice out of NYC (until the new ship comes in late 2007).
We went on the Spirit in August (I did a trip report) and I would tell you to try another ship...even another line. With the exception of Cagney's, the food was not so great (I'd say fair at best). We also had the septic smell in our bathroom the whole trip as the other poster stated....we kept the bathroom door closed all the time. It was pretty nauseating especially when I was brushing my teeth. The smell wasn't as bad in my parents room which was weird b/c it was right next door but you could still smell it. I never had that happen on a cruise. There is only one pool (aside from the kiddy pool) and it gets VERY crowded on the "AT SEA" days. Consider yourself lucky if you're able to score a clean towel at either of the pools, there were numerous times when all of the bins were empty. We also thought that they were very unorganized when it came to getting off the boat at the different stops....no one knew where they were going and there was no one around to ask. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part, we found the crew to be not nearly as pleasant as crew members on other cruise lines. Would we sail with NCL again? No. I would rather give my money to a better cruise line. Of course there will be plenty of people that will disagree with me but just like anything else, it's subjective.
We were on the Spirit in March and it was for the most part a good experience. I liked the food but that is probably because I went out of my way to avoid the buffet and we ate every meal in the dining room or in a speciality restaurant. The kids ate dinner from the buffet though because they had a wonderful area devoted just to the little ones and their favorite foods. They never complained once.
I tried every single speciality restaurant and enjoyed every one of them. I had a few complaints about this ship but none them had anything to do with the food on the ship. But as I said, I avoided the buffet.
It seems the more cruises I go on, the more I loathe having to jockey my own food from the buffet and deal with the crowds of people and the lines. I really like being waited on and sitting down to relax and enjoy the meal with my family.
Jeez, reading this thread makes me want to cancel our May cruise on the Spirit. I'm fully aware that the "complainers" (term not used in any negative way) tend to be more vocal on this and other message boards, so I take this with a little grain of salt.
But, is the food really THAT bad? Is the food on the buffet ALWAYS cold? Can the staff really be that bad? I'd be interested in hearing from more of those who actually enjoyed cruising on the Spirit.
By the way, we are Holland America fans and this is our first time on NCL. So, I am expecting to be slightly underwhelmed by the food, but I was still hoping to thoroughly enjoy it.
I thought the service was wonderful and the crew was extremely friendly. The buffet was VERY underwhelming. I diet most of the year when I'm not cruising so just getting to eat what I want is a real treat. I'm not picky but I did find the buffet food almost always cold and overcooked. The pasta station, beir garten hamburgers, hot dogs, fries etc were very good. The breads were also good, desserts bland, cookies really good (especially the macadamia nut). I'm not a complainer..just giving my honest opinion of the buffet. But like I said in an earlier post, it wouldn't keep me from cruising NCL if we got a good deal. Comparing Carnival and NCL food, Carnival wins by a landslide!
we were on the spirit in june and we found the buffet to be ok. The food was not cold at all. We sailed holland america and we didn't like the food there at all. They served meat loaf one night. The food was the best on the celebrity century but the spirit wasn't bad at all. Everynight in the casino they had food out which was nice. We had no complaints at all and we have been on a number of cruises. It even rained one day and we still had a great time. Just relax and have fun. The islands we were on were gorgeous. In fact we just booked another cruise with ncl this june. Enjoy yourself. You know what they say, A bad day on vacation is still better than a good day at work. lol
