your friend is right, the food, in my opinion is better, but remember there is so much more to cruising than food. The food on NCL is very good most of the time.

Another plus for HAL is the cabin sizes: larger.

Now lets look at what some of the drawbacks are: overall the lack on energy on HAL, both crew and cruisers. You will find as many people sitting quietly in the libarary reading and or sleeping during the day as you will find participating in activities. The casinos are small, very tight and not much fun. There is only one sur charge or specialty restaurant that, again, in my opinion isn't worth $30.00 per person. On the Sun you will pay between $12.50 and $20.00 for specialty dining.

I am not here to rip any cruise line apart, just want to point out there is a difference. If you enjoy top quality food, little activity, only fair entertainment and large cabins you might be better off on HAL. It is a great line. On the other hand if you are younger, like night life at all (none to speak of on HAL) don't expect the very best in dining, want a truely relaxed but very friendly crew I would stick with NCL. We enjoyed the trivia games more on NCL, if you are into things like that. Another activity on NCL is the martini clinic, HAL has wine tasting, but it is very expensive.

Hope this helps you make a decision.

Actually the food is an important issue for me along with some of the activities.....I hope the food is better on NCL than Carnival!! It looks like the Balcony is about the same size as Holland

You might have trouble finding both great food and good activiites. The two lines noted for food are Celebrity and HAL, they are also noted for lack of activities. I think the food on NCL is much better than Carnival and Carnival better than RCI, but again, food is so subjective. Some think Carnival has the best food of the mid range lines. Go figure????

The Zuiderdam is a lovely ship with great food. Secondly every H.A.L. ship is better than every NCL ship in every measurable way, or so it seems to me.

If you do choose NCL, take along extra cash for the upscale dining rooms. They are well worth the extra cost.

We sailed on the Zuiderdam and were extremely pleased with all aspects of food and service. The best service we ever had was on Zuiderdam! My husband and I are in our early 30s and love the refined elegance, service, and dining of HAL. We feel the same way about Celebrity. Dining is very important to us as part of the whole cruising experience and I would highly recommend HAL to you. We were booked in a Verandah on the Zuiderdam and enjoyed the size of the room and verandah, the best way to sail......
We will be sailing on NCL for the 1st time with our daughter who will be free, (our sole reason for sailing NCL), so I am interested to see how it compares to HAL and Celebrity, our favorites. I have always hesitated to sail NCL in the past due to food and service reviews I have received.

Happy Sailing!

I have never had a problem with the service on NCL, in fact, I love the friendly but laid back attitude of the NCL crew. If refined elegance is your thing, you may be disappointed in NCl. This isn't something they are noted for. Does this mean, the service isn't good? Absolutlely not, but refined sometimes known to others as snobbery, is for some other lines. You will not find this on NCL, Princess, Carnival or RCI> You have chosen to take your toddler on a cruise, you have to give up something for something else. Because they do not charge for infants should indicate to you the line is geared to families. Lines that are family friendly normally do not fit into your definition of refined elegance.

I have been on both lines. The food is good on both. Stick tothe main dining room for great food. Try the stteakhouse on NCL for a great big juicy steak. Extrsa 20$ but worth it.
I found the two main differences was the personality of the ships. Holland America is formal and quiet. NCL is as informal as you like it escept no jeans in the dining room. Great for families. If you want to go formal just go to dinner after 8 and the crowd changes into more formal couples.
I like them both. NCL is more reasonably priced, also.
