We're going on a Baltic cruise on the NCL Jewel in August. We like the idea of arranging a bar set-up - as suggested on this forum so I emailed the cruise co-ordinator and got a very quick response (from the following address): groupeventjewel@ncl.com
Previous posts suggested the cost would be between $40 and $55 for litre bottles. On this cruise (don't know about others) the prices are $60.00 to $100.00 plus a one-off $3.00 set up fee - and the bottles are only 750 ml. If this is the cheaper way to have a drink on board, I'm dreading the prices in the bar!!
We won't be pursuing this - but if others wasnt to, the contact details are:
Mayra Mateiro | Group Event Coordinator Jewel
1-800.327-7030 ext. 7770.
800.327-9020 | Ext 7770 | fax 305.436-4147
The pricing has in fact changed but the bottles were still liters at least on the Jade earlier this month. The good news that have added some better brands. The bottle of Grey Goose for $100 was a blessing in the cabin. Pour a drink and head out to the courtyard, perfect.
As some of you knew already, NCL have now confirmed that the bottles are litre ones - not 750ml as previously advised. Maybe the prices are ok after all!
Is it safe to e-mail the cardnumber when ordering a bar setup or is the only way to do it to call? I think it should be much better if they just put it on the onboard account, does anyone know why they don´t do that?
I know that mixers aren´t provided with the liquor but is it possible to order mixers for the bar setup for a decent cost? Is the best way just to bring mixers to the ship?
You can bring your mixer on board. They shouldn't confiscate it.
We did the bar set up on our last cruise and brought our own soda with no problem. It was a couple of one liter bottles of club soda that was placed in our checked baggage.
Take care,
Mike

I know that I´m allowed to bring nonalcoholic beverages to the ship but it would be nice not to have to!
If you don´t bring the mixers to the ship and it´s not possible to order mixers for the bar setup the bar setup seems rather useless. You wants to make a drink in the cabin but first you have to order sodas from roomservice! Then I should prefer to order the drinks with alcohol even if it cost more!

Just stop by any bar and pick up some cans of mixers and put them in the fridge. In fact your fridge will be a stocked mini bar when you board and may already have what you want.
Myself, personally, I was referring to things like sweet and sour mix and apple pucker, etc.
Thanks!
Better bring your own. Now Apple Pucker is liquor so you could get a glass straight up at the bar and use it to mix several drinks. I don't think you would want to buy a whole bottle at bar setup prices even if they had it.
What kind of mixers I want depends on what kind of liquor I should order.
With whisky I prefer to drink it as it is with just some water or as a long drink with coke.
With vodka I prefer something with a taste of lemon or orange.
One alternative could be some kind of drinkmix, like mix or maybe Pina colada mix.
Cans of coke at all the bars and part of the mini bar in your cabin. I would buy a bottle and carry it on so I could reclose it. I eneded up throwing away many half used cans of flat coke light on the Jade.
You can get lemon and lime slices from any bar. A little tip fills the glass. Orange juise from room service comes sealed in the glass with plastic film. You can always hit the buffet in the morning as well.
Drinkmix - bring your own. There are some dry mixes that pack well.

Once again, many thanks! (UR right, probably don't want to pay too much for the pucker.)
Shoreguy,
Only last February of '07 we paid 32.00 for tequlia and 30.00 for Smirnoff Red!!! To double the prices on us in less than two years is a little greedy.
On HAL over Christmas of '08 we got two bottles of each for under 150.00.
NCL must know they have a captive customer.

yes, HAL is still the least expensive and Celebrity the highest. I don't know about Carnival but someone said they do not have a bar set up program nor does Princess. Well Princess does to a degree, but no more mixers and they only allow .375 purchases; that is pretty darn small. It isn't really worth it....
Mixers isn't an issue with us: DH drinks scotch with water or on the rocks, I will bring along some crystal light for my vodka, but I am not sure we are going to bother this time.

Well to be exact you paid $40 per bottle plus a $3 fee. Not saying the new prices are a bargain but they are not double. Not that a 50% increase is small. The good news at least for me if I have to pay a lot they have quality brands now.
If I order a barsetup I will most likely bring the mixers. To buy cans of coke for around $2 and bring them to the cabin seems kind of stupid when they are much cheaper to bring.
And they wonder why many sneak booze on board. Give me a break please.
It is like travel insurance. With the bar setup you know that bottle will be there and it is still far cheaper then by the drink. On the other hand we can elect to break the rules and bring our own but we have to know going in there is a good chance there will be no bottle in the room. It all averages out and if you have to fly to the ship and that bottle in the bag puts you overweight add $50 to the price of sumggled booze.
We were on Majesty out of Charleston and we didn't have a bar set-up, but we did buy full bottles poolside. Our bar waitress (Nanette) always made sure we had plenty of mixers for free. She brought whatever we wanted, from cans of sodas and juice to bottled tonic water and lime slices.
