Default Questions about the Majesty-Charleston to Bahamas

I'm so confused about this ship.. I just spent an hour reading posts over the last two years.. and they're split in half. It seems you either LOVE it or HATE it..

We just booked the Majesty for Thanksgiving '08.. 7 days from Charleston to 3 Bahamas ports and Port Canaveral. I haven't seen much about this itinerary.

I'm hoping we don't have the "rough seas" that were mentioned in the Bermuda postings.. I'm not expecting much drama on the short cruise from SC to the Bahamas.. It's such a short way.

I know not to expect all the bells and whistles.. which is fine. We've got two little girls.. I'm just hoping THEY ARE entertained.
SINCE I have two little girls.. I'm looking for peace and quiet and looking forward to sitting on a chair reading my book with nobody bothering me. My husband likes the casino... but we're not big on shows and buffets.. we're more about the ports and excursions.

Are we gonna be ok on this Majesty ship? 4 people in an outside cabin.. level "JJ" I believe they said. Haven't gotten the confirmation yet to check on the room number..

Haven't heard much about Great Stirrup Cay yet.. I'll go hit the destination board next..

You will find a VERY friendly, hard working crew. We cruised March 22-29 '08. Loved the crew. One negative was the lack of communication between the staff organizing the shore excursions. It took an hour and a half for the passengers to tender off the ship - standing in a line in the hallways, up the stairs and around. They have to work on a better system which might be straightened out by Thanksgiving. MAKE sure that you call Norwegian's toll free number ASAP and talk to an NCL person YOURSELF.... make sure your window is not obstructed....(who wants to look out their window and only see the side of a life boat?) IF so, then ask for them to change your room assignment. It is early and they can and should do that for you even if you went through a travel agent. Travel agents don't seem to ask the cruise line about these things. NCL will know your room assignment as soon as you book. The kids club program is excellent. Your kids should enjoy it and you will have free time to sit and enjoy yourself. Participating in the activities is a fun part of the cruise.

Hi Michele;

I just read your post, and it seems that you have almost the same questions as I do. I, too, will be taking the Majesty from Charleston with the same itinerary..just in January 2009. My husband is military and will be coming back from deployment and we are so set on taking this cruise.

Seeing that you and your family will be taking this cruise before i do, would it be alright if I could stay in touch with you to get your views on your trip? It would be so great to get a first hand account on this boat and to see how you enjoyed yourselves.

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Hope we can stay in touch!

I have not cruised the Majesty but have clients that have: a love/hate, yes, the reason, mainly, she was not built for freestyle and many who choose NCL now do it because they are in love with freestyle. Of course she is an older ship as well, so doesn't offer the glitz you get on newer ships. For these reasons many are disappointed. As long as you know what to expect you should have a wonderful experience.

As mentioned which is the case with most NCL ships, the crew works very hard to please everyone. When I hear people say the crew was rude or they just didn't care, I wonder if they thought they were on NCL but were really on some other line. No, NCL isn't perfect and they do need to work on some areas but friendly, helpful crew is not one.

NCL gets awesome rating for the kids program regardless of the ship.

All in all if you consider the price you pay to sail the Majesty and rememeber she is older you should be just fine.

I am considering this cruise out of Charleston in 2009. I'm anxious to hear you post your experience. This will be our first cruise ever. (Husband and I - no children).

we've taken this ship twice to Bermuda and loved her. The crew is fantastic. Older ship but fine. Freestyle worked out fine for us since we ate around 6 or so and had the same waitress and table for two each evening by a window. Loved it. The Promenade deck is awesome if you want to kick back and read a book. I've been known to sleep away the afternoons there. Quiet and beautiful.
We've been on bigger, more glitzy ships with all the bells and whistles, but this ship remains one of our favorites. It's more low key and personable than most.

Just in case people are interested in doing a little research for themselves, here are a couple of links to various reviews and reports I have found on the internet, for recent cruises of the Majesty.

Here's a link to the recent closing of the sale of the ship to Louis Cruise Lines:

Here's one from Star Cruises about the sale (It opens a PDF):

Hope this helps...

The waters to Bermuda are a lot more choppy than to the caribbean. I haven't been to GSC yet but the ship was nice for a smaller ship. Sorry to hear NCL sold her.
Disney Wonder
Carnival Liberty
NCL Majesty
Carnival Legend
HAL Eurodam

Having been on the Majesty twice and once again this January, we enjoy the ship, especially the crew. We have been in inside cabins (the "superior" level - being the larger) and plan on an ocean view in January.

Your JJ cabin would be an inside "superior" cabin, and not an outside cabin, as you mentioned - just something to be aware of just in case you were expecting something different.

Anticipation - when are you going in January? We are on the Jan 10 sailing and are already looking forward to it!!
