Even if we spoke swedish and you couldn't understand? I should try not to be rude and speak to you but not all people in Sweden, especially elder people, are very good at english so maybe we should speak swedish most of the time. I shouldn't enjoy to share a big table with germans or italians who only spoke their own language.
Funny you would mention the language, several years ago my 2 daughters and I were on a Carnival cruise. We were seated at a table for 8, the three of us, 3 middle aged sisters that fought most of the cruise with one leaving the table every few minutes to have a smoke and a very nice, young couple from Swedan. The problem, the young lady spoke not one word of English and the young man, very litttle. Needless to say, we were glad we had each other to visit with.

How many is "several years"? Interesting that it was a young couple since everyone in Sweden read english in school. Elder people may not have studied english in school but everyone does it now.

Eric, it was about 10 years ago, maybe 11. Of course, because they appeared to be a couple in their early to mid 20s, they quite possibly had been out of school a few years...

Or maybe they just did not want to talk with everyone at the table and wishing they were on a freestyle ship at a 2 top.

Actually, that happened to us on a cruise to alaska, about 16 yrs ago, on the old Regency line. We were sailing with friends, and they put us at a table for 8 with 2 couples from Taiwan. Only one of the men spoke fairly fluent English. It just so happened that the first night was my birthday, so we bought wine for the table, and of course they joined with us in the birthday cake. They couldn't have been more delightful, and we 4 had a real opportunity to learn about other people. Everynight after that, they insisted on buying the wine, and we even went on tours together. We found out from the waiter that we were the second people seated at the table, the other had gotten up and left in a huff demanding another table. At first, we thought we'd only be interacting with each other, but as it turned out, it was a wonderful cruise, and we left with thier addresses in Taiwan, in case we ever found ourselves there. These folks were so grateful for a little friendliness and kindness.

oh, I agree with what you are saying, but in this our case this was not the situation. Not only did the young women speak no English, they were much younger than any of us except maybe my one daughter. Even she was about 10 years older than they appeared to be. yes, things can work out, ofter they do not.
