Default REVIEW OF JEWEL 10/28 SAILING

We were on the Jewel 10/28 sailing. We had a great time and the Ship was beautiful. I was very impressed with the way they handled the Virus Issue. There were hand sanitizers throughout the entire ship including on every elevator. For those rebellious people who never listen to anyone, crew were posted at various locations, especially at the entrance of each restaurant and bar spraying everyone's hands before they could enter...I SAY...AMEN TO THAT!!! I felt very safe and felt that the ship's crew took this problem very seriously. In addition to that, guests were not allowed to help themselves to any food. Crew put your food on your plate at the buffets, ice cream, coffee machines, etc, just for those people who never wash their hands, sneeze on themselves, then touch everything infecting everyone!! ha ha

Two things that bothered me:
1. I was not happy with is that I felt like we were being nickled and dimed to death! Some of the restaurants were worth the extra fee such as Le Bistro and the Steak House. The Italian restaurant was great also. i was not impresses with Tangos (Tex-Mex or Chin-Chins). Once you pay the cover, when you get the menu...there are certain entrees that are an additional $10.00 on top of the cover. I thought that was pushing it

2. I thought the Crew ws very unfriendly. Our cabin Steward never made up the room until 4:00 or so and twice, he never did at all untill he turned down the cabin!!! I was a little surprised at that!

This was only my 2nd NCL Cruise, but our 13th Cruise...The first was 6 years ago and I didn't remember feeling this way.

I would go on another NCL Cruise if the Itinerary was right.

sorry you had a couple of concerns and they sound legit. As for an unfriendly crew, boy that surprises me!!! The cabin steward situation, did you complain to housekeeping? I certainly would have...

Tangos, an extra $10 for some things, what, can you remember? We were not impressed with Tangos when it was free even though we love the Jewel... I have read a few reviews and some have said, they now serve Lobster tacos for the $10.00 so I am curious as to what could be an additional $10.00?

I was on this same cruise. I can't say the cabin steward was unfriendly because I have no idea who it was. Never saw him/her during the 12 days but they kept the cabin reasonably OK so no problem. We did not encounter any crew that seemed unfriendly although I did hear other people have that concern.

I saw the extra $10 menu items in Cagney's and Mama's but don't remember seeing anything extra in Tango's although I might have overlooked it. I did have the Lobster tacos and was not impressed.
We were only charged $10 ea.

interesting about the Lobster tacos, some rave about them, others say what you are saying, noting special. Being from the old school where tacos are made with beef or chicken only I think I will choose to skip them...

Cabin steward/stewardess; sounds like you had the same one we did. nothing wrong, nothing special and how we knew it was a female, I don't know, never saw or met her. I wonder if they realize how much an introduction means? We had the same problem on Princess. There was a card in our cabin, telling us her name and if we had a problem to call her at such and such ext; we had a problem, she wouldn't or couldn't, I think some would say she was just lazy, others it was a communication problem.

We were also on this cruise. We found the crew very friendly almost everywhere on the ship. Our cabin attendent came to our room the same day,10/28, that we sailed. Gave him a $10 tip then and everything was perfect after that. Very good service. Cabin always made up by 10:00AM, ice bucket filled fresh 2 or 3 times a day without asking. He asked almost every day if we needed anything else. So good we gave him another $10 tip on the evening before cruise ended.

We were on the Jewel in October and found that the stewards on the household staff were excellent. We gave them an additional tip but not until the second to last day of the cruise, just because we wanted them to know that we had noticed the extra effort.

We ate at the specialty restaurants and although I agree that they do have addtional priced items, the quality and service is well worth the price. We also took advantage of the 2 for 1 deals that they had on port days.

I agree with Jim, the staff is excellent on the Jewel and the quality of the food and the service make the specialty restaurants well worth the price.

Some items cost extra but menus are at display so that people can see them before they decide to go to any of the specialty restaurants, the extra charges are mentioned there.

We were on the Jewel sailing from Miami to Cozumel and Grand Cayman on Nov 9-14. We were NOT impressed by the food. Cagney's charged an additional $10 for the Surf&Turf. I really didn't appreciate the cover charge except for Teppanyaki, where they cook all the food right in front of you. That was well worth it. All the rest of the food was just...OK. Nothing special at all. The service, however, was exceptional throughout the ship. Our steward introduced himself on the first day and I felt very "at home" because of him. Check out my post in the "First-time" section, under "Dizzy from all the decisions".

Scooter, I assume you have cruised before, if so, the idea of sur charge dining is not only an NCL thing, the difference, most lines only offer a couple of choices, though more are being added all the time. NCL offer several. No one says you have to choose to eat there. the Jewel has 2 main dining rooms, the buffet, the grill and Blue Lagoon. As far at the food being ok, I can buy that. Food is subjective, I am a true NCL loyalist but don't think the food is spectacular..It is like you said, OK. Some things are wonderful, eggs benedict, best I have ever had, great breads, some good desserts and the soups are famous all over the cruising industry. I don't think the entrees are anthing special. Again food is subjective.

Now to read your review, thanks for taking the time to post it.

Just returned from the Jewel 11-23-08. (Deck 10 Cabin 10000) This was our 25 cruise on NCL in less than 5 years. Yes--I am a great fan of "FREESTYLE"

My husband and I both felt our room stewards were the best we have ever encountered. Lilibeth & Utzel--excellent service. My husband had problems with his back after the 2nd day. That night we brought the lawn chair in from the balcony and he slept on it. Every nite after that the steward & stewardess would have the chair made up like a bed with sheets, covers and pillows. WHAT SERVICE!!!! There were many things throughout the cruise that made their service exceptional.

On all our cruises we have been happy with the service of the stewards, but these two went well above the usual duties. We always tipped over the "recommended" amount, but their service earned them an additional $180 for the week.

wow, they must have done a heck of a good job or you were really lucky in the casino!!!??? I am glad you had good service, I hate to hear complaints, but I do feel anyone can get a bad apple. I don't care what line, not all the help is going to be top rate..

Nita,
Even tho this was our first cruise, we did read up on the cover charges in the specialty restaurants, so it wasn't a surprise to us. I guess I was just expecting SPECTACULAR food in those specialty restaurants. When I thought about how much the cruise cost, then thought about paying even MORE for food that was just adequate, it irritated me. I have to say Cagney's was excellent, and so was Tepanyaki.

All in all, tho, we both really enjoyed the experience and will be back!!!
Thanks!

HI I agree with the last post. Personally, I wont spend on specialty , we went to the steak one, the name escapes me right now ?cagneys?, and it was adequate but nothing special and not worth laying out money for especially since the food in the main dinning rooms while not spectacular is certainly good enough and we enjoyed it a great deal. It was a nice night, dont get me wrong, but not nice enough I would pay for it. I can get a steak here that costs the same if not less and tastes far better.
