Default Thanksgiving Day Crusie

Hi e1, Got back from my crusie a week ago. My group of 18 family and friends went with NCL Spirit Nov.23-31 2008. it sucked. It is safe to say we will never crusie sail with NCL again. The ship rocked our first four day out which made most of us stay in bed. One couple said they just wanted to call someone to air lift them off the ship in the hell with the rest of the crusie. In just so you no it was'nt just my group there were a lot more people complaining. The food was the worst thing I have tasted in a long time.Breakfast was fair but after that we lived off of hot wings for the 7 days. Could not get reservation in speciality rest. The cost they tell you is a complete lie. The Steak house. They say $25.00 but you paid $10.00 more for this or that. The show's sucked.Pool deck close down at 6pm most nights. Nothing to do but go in the casino, which paid off very well.Kid Quest was great (should have sign us adult up) .The kids did not want to leave there. The ship was beauitful. Very clean no complains there. All in all we agreed to plan another trip for christmas 2010. Carnival here we come.

I can't believe they took that bumpy route.

Carnival only ever sails on perfectly calm seas, you should enjoy the next one much more

Ewww sorry you didn't have the experience you were expecting. I really liked the Spirit, but I do understand your issues very well. The first time we sailed the Spirit, we had no issues with booking the speciality restaurants because they had not yet introduced the "24 hour rule" and we made all of our reservations for week when we first boarded. The second time we were given VIP status (still don't know why, ) but with that, they gave us priority reservations and concierge services an we were on the ship for 2 weeks and got to try everything at least once. My favorite was the asian fusion and sushi, we went there several times, even for lunch sometimes. On other NCL ships we had similar issues getting into the venues we wanted to try. The rocking happens on all ships depending on the seas, and I have had a few wild rides, we even had a rough ride on our Med Cruise during Thanksgiving weekend. There is nothing you can do about it aside from fully stocking your medicine chest with motion sickness remedies if you are prone to get ill. It's all part of cruising for better or worse. My main complaint with the Spirit is that the entertainment venues are few and far between and quite small, so they tend to stick a guy playing a keyboard in a common area, but there really isn't that much night life on her. In Cagneys there are items on the menu available for the $25 surcharge, but they also have "premium items" that are an additional charge, at least that was how it has been when we've sailed NCL. You might like the Jewel, Gem or Pearl better they are quite a bit larger and have a bit more going on.
I have a strategy on NCL that works well, avoid the buffet (I dislike buffets immensely on any ship), try a different restaurant every night, and enjoy a relaxing breakfast and lunch in the dining room and that works well for our family. When we stick to that, we have no food issues on NCL. Also when you need a snack go to Blue Lagoon. they have great wings, mac & cheese, and hot dogs for the kids. Someone said they had good tomoato soup too, but I haven't tried it.

Its too bad you were disappointed, I totally understand though.

Just off the Spirit, the steak house is not $25, it is $20.00. Yes, there is an extra charge for Lobster or a 24 oz ribeye, most everything else was $20.00. ***edited by moderator***.As for nothing to do at night, what about music being played in 4 different lounges, nightly shows, nightly trivia plus the game show contests, Karioke everynight? What are you used to in the evenings?

One thing you are forgetting, you cruised Thanksgiving week on a ship that was completely sold out.. We have cruised the same week in the past (not on NCL) and would probably never do it again.. Holiday cruising isn't the best...

Nita
Nita, we had the filet mignon at Cagney's-and we did NOT pay extra. I would much rather have that-no matter how big the ribeye! I had the 5 ounce, hubby went for the 8 ounce. He also had the banannas foster which he said was great-as we used our half price coupon, we paid $20, ! no complaints!

He saved his lobster for the lobster raveoli in the Italian restaurant-and as we ate at 6 pm- we only paid $5 each for our dinner that night!

Yes, our ship also was very full as we crusied October 23-30 on the Pearl. And you are right-I do not like ships that are full to the point that most staterooms have more than 2 people. Thanksgiving crusies are like that though- aren't they? No matter the lline.

As far as the ship rocking badly, that ship travels the gulf right? Any gulf cruise I have taken, has been "rocky," also any cruise I have taken in the Atlantic, that was not in the caribbean, was also rocky. That is just the way it is-and it does not matter what line you are on. Tthe first time I cruised the gulf, I was on a carnvial ship. and I became extremely seasick, so I know from experience that happens on Canrival ships in the gulf. !

I have heard NCL has a great kid's club. Zeta 3, from the other board, did back to back crusies Thanksgiving week. She did NCL Sky and then she debarked and boarded Carnival Imagination. She said her daughter would not stay away from the kid's club on the Sky-but they could not get her to go the Kid's club on Carnival as she hated it so much the first day.
