Default WESTERN CARIBBEAN CRUISE WITH 9 MONTH BABY

Hello all,

My husband and I will be taking a cruise with our daughter who will be 9 months when we travel. We are cruising to the western caribbean, roatan island, belize and cozumel are our ports of call. My main concern is getting around once we get off the ship, since we wont have a carseat for taxis or in buses. How are the water taxis in belize? Do they travel very fast? Does anyone have any recommendations to further the articles which are already posted on this topic? We would most like to take beach excursions, but would prefer to avoid unecessary travelling on shore. In cozumel is it true there are beaches right by the pier? What about in Honduras? We took a cruise for our honeymoon 3 years ago and we stopped in honduras, I found the drive to tabyana beach along the mountainous road to be a bit scary, are there any alternative beaches that don't take that route or is there anything to do righ by the pier? In Belize the excursions mention that boat rides to the beaches are 45 minute rides each way - what type of ride is it? Are they speed boats? I may sound anal, but I just want to be prepared so we can forgo certain excursions if we feel they are unsafe. I look forward to hearing some feedback. Cheers.

Here are my thoughts: Cozumel, I would take a taxi to Chankanaab National park. It is about a 10 minute ride, no car seats for little ones but the drivers are pretty careful and the beach really nice. Belize, someone else will have to fill you in on that one, I am not a Belize lover so would rather not say much. As for Roatan, you are right, that ride is a bit scarey and I was raised going up and down mountains in California. There are other beach areas that are a bit easier to get to. Again, you will need to hire a taxi or van when you get in port or check the ports a call threads to see what is available. I do not think you are bing anal, your concerns are real. Of course we raised our kids without car seats, or any such thing, but that was then, this is now.

roatan island, belize and cozumel.
For Roatan there is Fin's and Flipper's resort which is very close to where the ship docks.

I would not take a 9 month old in the Belize water taxi...first of all they do go very fast and hit the waves very hard once they hit cruising speed. Some have enclosed passenger areas, others are wide open. We've lost hats, sunglasses and other stuff have gone flying out of the boat due to the high speed and rough ride. The other reason is that to get to the water taxi you have to leave the security of the Belize tourism village and walk down a street to where you buy your ticket. We have done this a few times ourselves, but it was only because we had a very large group and some very big intimidating looking men escorting us. We had no problems but I just wuldn't be comfortable doing it with a baby.

I woul recommend the ship's tour (I can't recall what it's called) but it takes you over to Spanish Bay on a tender. It's close by and its one of the few places in Belize that has a beach. They have floats and stuff. There is a restaurant on the other side of the Island owned by Hugh Parkey's Divers. You will feel safe and no one will bother you there. We thought it was fine for a day with the kids.

In Cozumel, I would recommend getting a rental car through Ace/Executive car rental (reserve it in advance) and rent a car seat if you aren't bringing your own and go to one of the beautiful beaches along the main road that circles the island. It is very easy to get around Coz.

We have been on a couple of cruises with our grandson one at 5 months and one at 22 months, the sit and stroll came in very handy. I don't know if you have seen them, but they don't take up as much room going around the ship and you can also use it as a car seat. If that doesn't work for you Paradise Beach in Cozumel isn't very far by taxi and it has nice facilities. Have a great cruise and enjoy your memories with the littleone.

I had a sit n' stroll too when the kid's were little. Word to the wise, you can pick them up for alot less on Ebay usually. Just make sure its a new one and not used.

Great idea!
