Default GEM out of NYC, Rough sailing?

I had heard that the first day out of NY Harbor to Port Canaveral can be rough.

Has anyone experienced this?

This will be our first trip on NCL/GEM. We are going in April.

Please let me know if you have any experience with this.

Thank you,

David

I have cruised out of NYC at least 10 times. No two trips the same. The first day has ranged from glass to 40' foot seas. No storm off the coast no heavy seas. I think April should be a low probability of heavy seas.

One thing about the Gem and all the Jewel class ships they are very good in heavy seas. Normally you really feel nothing until the seas get over 12'.

Day 1 Feb 2007

Day 1 Feb 2006

Day 1 Feb 2005

I agree. If I did not want to feel like I was on the ocean I would book a hotel. The first Pearl TA we hit 3 days of storms. Winds peaked at over 150mph, The seas were crazy and we loved it.

They did have to give those in the Owners Suites in the front of the ship a midship inside cabin to sleep in. They kept getting tossed out of their beds.

I agree with Shoreguy. We're cruised out of NYC probably many times and the seas were smooth as glass and then we had cruises where we had 18-22 ft seas for 48 hrs straight. That's one thing you can't predict - just like the weather.

You can usually expect rough seas for about 6 hours when going by North Carolina. But, during that time, look for circular rainbows. I've seen them on 3 different trips.

Have fun and don't worry about a thing.

David, is your last name Pearl as mine is? I always said, they missed a great opportunity to get some publicity, by making me the Godmother of the NCL Pearl Have a great cruise!

Gotta love it. We were on the Majesty during Hurricane Bonnie. 40 foot seas. Not to be believed. Everyone was sick except me and an iron worker from South Boston. We were drinking beer at a bar that was open.
