Default NCL Secrets

I will be taking my first NCL cruise later this month on Jade - 13 days in the British Isles.. Many of you are seasoned NCL cruisers and know all the secrets that I won't find out until I cruise on the Jade.

Please share your best secrets and let me know what to expect and how to get the most out of my cruise experience with NCL.

Many thanks

The best advice I can give after 25 NCL cruises is put $150 in your budget for specialty dining venues. If you don't take advantage of them you really miss some of the best of Freestyle. Check out the main dining room menu, nothing to your taste, book dinner with a menu you want. 12 days last summer to Norway only 3 nights in the main dining rooms.

You should never have to eat a meal you are not delighted with. Not that there is anything wrong with the main dining room food but there are very often better options.

I agree with Shoreguy, but I don't know if you really have to set quite that much aside. Yes, trying, at least a couple specialty dining rooms are a must in our book.

I find the food in the Main Dining Room on most of the cruises to be just fine with me. We usually do one specialty restaurant per cruise if there is an extra charge. I like Oceania because their fabulous specialty restaurants are free. It's just another way to get more money out of the passengers. I don't run up too much of a tab on my cruises - I think they lose money on me!

I agree with Shoreguy. Add the $100 - $150 to your cruise budget and you will enjoy some of the best dining that ANY cruise line has to offer. You may have "free" specialty restaurants on other cruise lines but you will pay a much higher per diem on the other lines. I.E. Oceania, Azamara, Regent Seven Seas.

On disembarkation day stay in your cabin until your color is called or you are ready to leave. Have a leisurely breakfast in the dining room, the buffet or in Cagney's (if you have a full suite.)

Take care,
Mike

Thanks Mike.

Of course the per diem price depends on what kind of a "deal" you were able to get for the cruise. Our Oceania cruise was one of the best deals around. 15 days in a Concierge Balcony Cabin for $1,499 with free gratuities and $200 shipboard credit. I am still trying to beat that one. I am the frugal cruiser and would rather spend less per cruise and cruise more.

This is my first NCL cruise and I don't have any expectations of how the food or the service will be. I am eager to find out.

It confirms how we are all differant when I read these posts. We wont spend on specialty, we dont find it all that great, we went to Cagneys, It was OK, but nothing that great. We do like the mexican one, that apparently they now charge for, so we would maybe consider paying for that once in the cruise, other wise main dinning rooms for us, never buffet for dinner.

One of the best things, in my opinion, with NCL is that they have all those specialty restaurants. If you don't use them, you haven't really experienced Freestyle.

I think that it's good that they charge extra for some restaurants as long as some restaurants are included in the cruiseprice. If they didn't charged extra for Cagney's and Le Bistro, it should be impossible to get a table!

Thanks Erik. Most of the ships reservations at the specialty restaurants are hit or miss. I usually make reservations as soon as I get on the ship. I have never had a problem getting a reservation to dine on the first night we sail; they are never booked.

We will give them a try this cruise and see what happens. The new ships are also putting in several fabulous specialty restaurants -Like the Solstice class on Celebrity. This is no longer a "Freestyle" dining plus.

Can you mention any ship with 10 restaurants? (I obviously don't mean NCLships!)

It's good if more cruiselines add more restaurants on their ships but are the specialty restaurants on Celebrity included in the price? If not, if you can pay for those restaurants you can pay for the restaurants on NCL too!

I have never been disappointed on a meal in the maindining rooms either but if you want the best from NCL, you really need to eat the Banana foster flembee on Cagney's!

For me the best thing with NCL is that you can choose between 10 restaurants and you eat with who you want and when you want (that's not really true except for Blue Lagoon but anytime you want between 5.30 and 10.30 in many of the restaurants). So far, noone can beat that!

Yes, you are right. Other ships don't have 10 restaurants. I guess for me part of the cruise experience is going on a fabulous vacation and keeping within my frugal budget. On NCL I can still do that and if I decide to pay for dinner I have a lot of restaurants to select from.

Everyone has their own opinion, that's what makes the world go round.

Enjoy your cruise!

Default Balcony cabin with free gratuities and credit?

Cruiztime:
How did you get that deal on Oceania? Did you ask for it, or did they give to you out of the blue?

We used to fly KLM Israel-US on economy. But 4 flights we were put into buisness class even though economy was not full. I tried at counter several times to talk a upgrade, but never succeeded.

I found it on line. I also get a lot of email from on line TA's on a daily basis. I sign up for all their newsletters.

Where they get you is the FREE air. They charge taxes that run about $560pp. I didn't mention that we also had FREE round trip air to Rio included in the package. However it was still a lot cheaper than the price we would have paid to fly from the states to Brazil and home from Barcelona.

The cruise specials and promotions have been fabulous lately. Keep watching -

I was home raising 4 kids. They are all on their own now and I can get back on the high seas.

We are on a port intensive cruise. We won't be spending any time on the ship. Off at 8AM - back at 6PM - eat dinner and sleep. We have 10 ports and only 2 sea days. Caribbean cruises are a bit different, you have more time to enjoy the balcony and the additional services. I booied an outside, I should have gotten an inside for this cruise. We will be on the North Sea and it will be cool and damp. I hope we see some sun, my camera will appreciate the sunshine.

Default Cagney's Cappuccino Creme Brulee

Get the cappuccino creme brulee at Cagney's. It's worth the extra cost to eat there alone!

I have never been on NCL but I'm shopping for a cruise for my brother and his fiancee (wedding gift) and I'm seriously considering NCL. It's good to see that there are so many restaurants and that the speciality ones are so good.

Now, I'm from England and so is my husband (although we are now living in NY state) but if you have any questions about ports in the British Isles, just ask away or pm me if you prefer.

Have a lovely cruise.
