Default tips for 1st time cruiser

My hubby, 15 year old son and I will be going on our 1st cruise on NCL out of NYC to Bahamas on June 26th. I am looking for any tips that would be helpful since we are completely clueless

It looks like you've done the hard part and got the cruise booked. Now it's time to figure out how to have fun. If you are flying in I suggest that you fly in the day before. It will require a hotel but there are good deals to be had on Priceline or other discount sites that will make it less expensive.

I encourage to let your son experience the teen club and what it has to offer. It's a great way for him to meet other kids and have fun without mom and dad.

I also suggest that you go online to NCL.com and look through the shore excursions to get an idea on what you want to do. You are not required to take the ship's excursions but if you are unfamiliar with doing stuff on your own I would, at least for the first time, go with the ship's excursions. If you just want to hit a beach and take it easy then you can do that easily on your own. Grab a cab and head for the beach.

A mistake that many people do is trying to "everything". There are many activities and you can do as many as you wish but you will never be able to do everything and you do need time to relax, have a boat drink and take in some sun.

Keep an eye on your onboard account. It's a good idea to check it about mid-cruise to see how much you are spending. This avoids the last day heart attack when you get your bill. Your gratuities will be put on your shipboard account so make sure you allocate the $252 for all three of you.

Try to enjoy some of the onboard restaurants. Le Bistro and Cagney's are great and though there is a $20 - $25 surcharge they are well worth it.

Now let us know what things you want to do. What do you envision when you think of the cruise? That will give us more of an idea of what to tell you.

Take care,
Mike

Thanks so much. You have given me some sound advice. As for what we envision, well let me begin that my son and husband are very restless and think that they will be bored on a cruise. This is for my 50th and I have always wanted to cruise so they are coming along for the ride, so to speak. I am a foodie and like to try different things but my son and husband are less adventurous. My son, typical teenager, wants to play arcade games, sports and anything that looks dangerous. He already found out about the parasailing excursion which I am not too sure he should do. I am not much of a gambler but I do like Texas Hold 'em which my son taught me and Bingo. I know there is an age limit for the casino but is there one for Bingo or card games, etc.? I booked two cabins and we do not have to fly to our port. I wanted to make it as easy as possible since this is our first time cruising.

Thanks again for all your help.

have him try to locate some teens before he even cruises, but if he can't, make sure he goes to the first night teen get together. From then on, you will probably not see him much. As for hubby, whether someone gets bored on a ship is up to them. If you look for things to do plus getting off the ship in port there is no reason for anyone to be bored. If one thinks they have to be entertained every minute that is a different story..

You may want to think twice about Bingo, it is overpriced but the casino can be fun. Yes, your son can go to bingo with you, but if his card wins you have to collect the money..The min age in the casino is 18..Depending on how busy it is I have seen them ask kids to leave and I have seen a few, not 18 having a little fun on the penny machines.

You said you booked 2 cabins, but there are only 3 of you, I think I am a little confused about that? Are you going to only have 1 person in one of the cabins?

I booked two cabins in case my son wanted to bring a friend. If not, then he and my husband will be in one and i'll have one all to myself.

How much are the bingo cards?

hope you son can brirng a friend, it makes it so much more fun for the kids. As for Bingo cards, someone else can help you, I just know they are really pricey, more fun to give the slot machines your $40 or whatever....

Haven't cruised NCL but a recent Carnival cruise charged $20 for a bingo "sheet". I believe there were 3 cards on a sheet and it was good for 7 games.

In Nassau, you can take a cab over to the Atlantis, on Paradise Island. They have an amazing walk through seaquarium, called The Dig.

Bring a power strip for all the electronics...Other then the bathroom, there is one outlet on the desk area.

Do investigate the optional dining...while you can get carried away with your cravings,,the men can find something they will enjoy as well..

Don't buy any pictures till the end of the cruise...they add up fast. Ask for them to be held, and peruse leisurely, and pick the best. Enjoy!

I think you got all the tips which you want from the above posts but I just want to say one thing that never be late and for that you can set your watch to ship time so that you will never reach late at any place or in any activity on ship. Enjoy all the activities on the ship and be active so you can get all the information yourself.
