Question smoke on Epic

Is the second hand smoke really that bad on the Epic? Has anyone who is a nonsmoker sailed the Epic and not had a problem with second hand smoke? All the reviews are very bad (not just for the smoke but tons of other issues) and it is freaking me out because we are booked on the Epic 10/30/2010 and I am wondering if we made a big mistake. We have sailed with Disney 4 times prior to this cruise with NCL and reading the reviews is not making me feel very good about this cruise. Any positive feedback would be wonderful to put my mind at ease about our upcoming cruise with NCL.

I haven't sailed Epic, but have several other NCL ships, and I must say I am surprised by comments about "smoking issues" on the Epic.

NCL has designated ALL public indoor areas on their ships as non smoking ... with the exception of the casino. So it's difficult to figure out why smoke would be an issue in most public areas.

Even on outdoor decks my experience was smoking was confined to a fairly small designated area, and not allowed near any food service areas, like the grill, and outdoor garden cafes.

From my understanding (I haven't been on Epic yet) that the Casino is not in an enclosed space, but is a large portion of the deck (6 I believe). Because it isn't enclosed the smoke can travel throughout that deck and possibly up to the next deck and down to the deck below. I would guess this would be especially a problem if a large number of passengers were smoking in the casino at any given time (say on a sea day).

Kris, we are on the same cruise, with our Cruisemate group. From what Kuki, says, with the designated areas, for the most part, it does seem there would be no major issues...I hope you have a fun cruise too!

I think smoke politic is great mistake of NCL ,
but I didnT really have much problem on Bord .

If I saw somebody with a pipe in casino
I ran away .

From what I have seen from the design of the Casino of the EPIC, the designers definitely went to a Vegas hotel to get ideas to increase foot traffic. I have been to Vegas a few times and what makes a HUGE difference in the smoking allowed casinos - is the hotel's ventilation/air filtration system. I have no problems with smokers ( hey if I was a smoker and allowed to smoke indoors I would) but heavy smoke and a poor ventilation system equals to what appears to be happening on the EPIC.

Just got off the 10/30 sailing on the Epic. The smoke issue wasn't so bad as long as you didn't go ANYWHERE near the casino. We did have smokers all around us in our balacony cabin and that was more irritating than the casino. The food on the Epic was way worse than the smoking issue. I don't recommend to sail NCL if you want quality meals or privacy in your stateroom when showering or using the toilet, nonexistent on this ship! Very disappointing ship/cruise.

Kris, I don't know where you ate, but we had some great meals..just a few were a disappointment. O'Sheehans, Moderno, & Shanghai/Noodle Bar, all delivered tasty dishes, to name a few.

When we were in the casino area, for us, the smoke was not an issue, because it was light, with the air purifiers going strong. We also had cigar smokers in the aft balcony area, which was more annoying, I agree.

Eveyone who booked this ship, knew about the bathroom issues, no surprises there...if it bothered you then, it would surely bother you when you had the need to use it....That's on you....

Did you enjoy the entertainment?

the only entertainment I enjoyed was Legends concert, Second City, and Howl at the Moon. By the time I found this website and started reading reviews on cruise critic it was too late to cancel the cruise or we would have. We knew exactlly what we were getting into and were just hoping for the best. We made the best of our vacation and had a wonderful week inspite of NCL and Epic, we just won't be repeat cruisers with NCL. I loved the pool deck area. Too many added costs with NCL also, we are used to not paying for any extras when sailing with Disney.

Kris, we enjoyed Legends, Blue Man Group and thought Second City was in a terrible venue., but we enjoyed them..On the Gem, we saw them in the theartre, much better.

The pool deck was a disappointment I thought, for anyone who really enjoys the pools..Giving over that much space for the slides, makes a few happy, while the majority would prefer a better designed pool area.

But, this is what makes the world go round..enough ships to make everyone happy...I have a more in depth thread in Chit Chat....

I hope your next cruise, is a great one.

We didn't care for Blue Man or Cirque. We sailed with our kids (13 and 11) so the slides were a big hit for our family. I liked all the hot tubs also. I also hope you enjoy your next cruise!

The casino is the center piece of the ship it has no celing so the smoke goes up to the next floor, the casino is in the mddle of the ship, so you have to circumvent your way around it, it is hard to ignore all the smoke, they have had to put purifiers in the casino because it is usually very bad, I would not sail on the epic, If you want to see blue man, legends and cirq just go to vegas for the weekend and see the real thing, the epic is one ugly ship it looks like a container ship, it is only 200 feet longer than the ncl dawn yet it holds almost twice as many people. I have sailed 5 ncl cruises and one celebrity cruise (solstice) on celebrity you cannot smoke in your room, not even on the balcony, or in the casino, or anywhere in the ship, there are only a few places outdoors you can smoke, so if smoke is an issue consider a different cruise line. Good Luck have fun
