Default Cruisemates Epic Adventure: 10/30 to 11/06

The fun has begun.
It was an early morning flight for us and the 4:00 a.m. wakeup is never fun but we made it to the airport and boarded our flight to Miami with no problems. The flight was uneventful and we arrived on time. It is a bit of a walk from many of the gates to baggage claim so be prepared.
We grabbed a cab, from the taxi stand, just outside baggage claim and headed downtown. On this trip I used Priceline and my bid was accepted by The Conrad. It is a Hilton Hotel and quite nice but it is a mile or more from Bayside and the cruise port. However, for $75, I’m not going to complain. Well, the $6.00, eight ounce, mini-bar Coke was a little hard to handle. J
The hotel is nice with a lovely pool area that my sister and my wife definitely had to try out. We also had a fantastic lunch at Nuevocentro, which is just across the street from the hotel.
This evening we met two of our fellow Cruisemates cruisers, Linda and Guery and Gaile (Tweety) and Harry drove down from Orlando to join us for dinner at Bubba Gump's at Bayside Marketplace. Linda (Trip) and Bruce were no shows. I think she was probably recovering from a shopping coma after hitting the stores in Fort Lauderdale.



Tomorrow we board the Norwegian Epic and real fun begins. It’s late now and time to hit the hay. 4:00 a.m. Minnesota time seems like a long time ago.

Epic Day 2
It looks like I lived through the first day on board the Norwegian Epic. We left our hotel, The Conrad, at noon and took a $10.50 cab ride to the port. I have to say that my first impression of seeing Epic from the outside was: “Wow, that’s a big ship.”
We arrived at around 12:20 and the efficient stevedores took our luggage and we proceeded through to check-in. It was quick and painless. When we walked into the check-in area we initially thought that it would take a while because the Latitudes line was VERY long. However, we looked farther down and the regular line was only about 10 people deep. We went down there and were onboard in less than 10 minutes. At least I knew there would be a large number of previous NCL cruisers on board.
You first enter the ship on deck six and right into the largest casino I’ve seen at sea.

It takes up two thirds of deck six. I knew that you could store carry-on luggage in Headliner’s Comedy Club and I asked one of the brightly dressed representatives where it was and she pointed us forward. We proceeded there and checked our carry-ons. This is a great service. One thing I hate doing is wheeling a carry-on around the ship while waiting for the cabins to open up. Once checked we went looking, for what everyone looks for when they first board, food. We made it as far as O’Sheehans.
O’Sheehans Pub is a large 23 hour venue on deck six and has large variety of comfort food, appetizers and breakfast items on the menu. It has a much greater variety than the Blue Lagoon venues on other NCL ships. I ordered a 20 oz. Dos Equis tap, a chicken pot pie and mozzarella sticks. I was EXTEMELY happy at how good they were. The mozzarella sticks were hot and had a flavorful breading and the chicken pot pie was excellent.
The atrium area is beautiful and it also the central hub for most of the main dining and entertainment venues. If you find the atrium you will be able to find most of the dining areas and the smaller entertainment venues such as Headliners, Fat Cats, Teppanyaki, etc.

We then made our way around to explore the ship. The bad part was that after a couple of pictures my camera decided that it would no longer open its lens cover. So I apologize for not having more initial photos. We toured deck six and deck seven and saw where most of the entertainment venues were located and the locations of the dining rooms and Cagney’s and Moderno were located. By this time the cabins had opened up and we wandered up to our cabin. We booked cabin 12259, a D3 Deluxe Balcony cabin. Upon entering I got my first experience of the new wave design. I have to be very honest and even after eighteen hours I have to say I am not impressed. While the cabin has tons of storage space the living in the space is quite Spartan. The cabin seems far too narrow and even a Deluxe cabin is quite tight for three people, especially when one is not a spouse or child. I’m 6’2” and 240 lbs. and walking between the bed and the wall is “tight”. There is no coffee table because there just isn’t room for one. The curved couch is very uncomfortable to sit on especially if you want to lean back. It does pull out a bit and makes up into an adequate bed.
Now for the infamous bathroom, or lack thereof, design. The split shower and toilet are not something I like. If you pull the curtain you can have some privacy but if you are doing your business there is no sound dampening. If you get what I mean. J Also a late night trip to the bathroom will wake most people when the toilet flushes. However, we will be able to handle it for a week. The one thing that concerns me is that NCL is reclassifying this cabin as a mini-suite and I feel this is real misrepresentation, especially if you have had a mini-suite on other NCL ships.
We had dinner in Cagney’s and it was wonderful. The steaks and lamb chops were well prepared and the service was top notch. By this time, with the help of a pair of tweezers and a nail file, I was able to fix the camera so I do have a little “food porn” to show you.

Ha! Food porn! You're right Mike, those pics did it for me - I can't wait for our cruise in less than 2 weeks - just for the food!
Great reporting so far, and keep that nail file handy so we can see more pics!

The ship is beautiful. I am wanting to see the room, so if the camera is working, be sure to take some picks for us. (I don't need a picture of your sister in the shower)

Wow the ship looks beautiful,,,but I have heard about the problems with the bath area. If you can get that darn camera to work again Please take photos of your room/bath area for us.

Have fun,,and try not to eat too much,,,wow that's a big steak !!!!

Those pics of food made me hungry, I don't think you'll starve on this cruise. So, how do you like the ship??

Epic Day 3
The Fun Continues:
It was sea day and most of the day was spent lounging in the sun and taking a few runs down the water slides. There are long lines for the slides and we only went down the green and blue slides. The lines were too long for the Epic plunge. We'll try that at a later date. A negative I have to report is that Epic's pool layout creates probably the most crowded pool deck I have ever seen. It is a bit hard to navigate at times. Fortunately chair saving was at minimum.

In the afternoon was when everyone finally got to meet each other. We had a great gathering at Maltings Whiskey bar with a large group of Cruisemates in attendance. Chef Matt had the bar staff greet us with his Signature cocktail. A Malibu Rum and whiskey mix. It was “interesting” and a bit too sweet for my taste but it seemed to be well received by other people. It was a nice time meeting new Cruisemates and getting reacquainted with some old CM friends. Our wonderful Trip was the Hostess with the Mostess and made everyone feel comfortable.



Betty, my sister and I decided to start Halloween off early and “dressed” for the occasion. Others hadn’t quite got into the Halloween Spirit yet but they did later in the evening.

After the cocktail party we all went to Taste for a good dinner. I had a great pork loin with butternut squash and the caramel bread pudding for dessert was wonderful. One hint don’t order the steak from “Always Available”. Three people in the group ordered, including Betty, and it was not a good piece of beef.




In the evening a great Halloween party was thrown on deck with a LARGE number of people in costume. Unfortunately my camera decided to, once again, act up so I missed some great shots. Linda has some great pictures and I will get them from her and post.
I was completely worn out by 10:30 and bed was a welcome place and I retired early but I could hear that the party went long into the night.
I am actually writing this after our day in Costa Maya. I don’t know if I partied too hardy last night but my brain decided to take a vacation today and I only got a cursory look at Costa Maya. The one thing I have to say is that the shopping area, at the end of the pier, has grown about 20 times the size it was five years ago. There are all the stores you need to take your money. J
Tonight is my first Entertainment experience. We will be seeing Blue Man Group in about an hour and I am looking forward to it. I am also looking forward to catching the comic magician. I have heard from a number of people that he is hilarious and make sure you keep track of your watch.
Well I better post some pictures and then get to the Blue Man Group.
BTW: O’Sheehan’s is an excellent venue for lunch or breakfast.

Hi Kids,
Today we are in Roatan, parked, and ready to go on shore soon. Yesterday in Costa Maya, we went by trolley to the shopping area, and it was similar to Grand Turks, but not as sophisticated, more of a rustic feel. Sitting on the aft balcony we can see that, hardly anyone puts a tip in for the trolley driver

Last night we dined at the noodle bar at Shangai, and it was delish.. everything is ala carte, and $16.00 filled us up

We had a hard short shower last light, and, we all scattered in the pool area to get under cover. Running into Cruisemates around the ship is so nice.....I planned 2 more group dinners, to get us back together, laughing and chatting!

I am hoping to get together with Mike, to get some of my pictures up..It's Chef Matt's cooking demo tomorrow, so maybe we can get together for a bit. I especially want to post a picture of our cabin. We ended up with a handicapped cabin,and for someone in need of this, this large cabin will work superbly. Some buttons, I am afraid to even look at, for fear, I have summoned a Dr!!!

Ok, I am off for breakfast and to maybe shop some.....be back soon

Hey Mike - I love the Halloween costimes - clever to cover up your beard like that.

Yes, I guessed that Epic would have very limited deck space even though when I was on it was about 40-degrees outside (the entire Atlantic crossing was just frigid every day, even though it was June). I am sad to see that it is a nuisance for so many people.

I have heard they have done things to stop the water from splashing all over the top pool deck. Is that true? There used to be crewmen up there with rubber window-washer things pushing the water into the scuppers all day long. I also heard a lot about people getting burned feet up there from the pool deck. Did they fix that, too? I heard they put rubber mats down along the walking areas on the Pool deck.

That pool deck is one where you pretty much have to cross it to get to the buffet, or else walk through room corridors the deck below (which I do not care to do).

Seen any shows yet? Keep up the great message board reports and especially pictures!

Sorry I missed you yesterday but between having my brain take a vacation in Costa Maya and some technical difficulties I was not able to post an update. That doesn’t mean the fun and the activities stopped. It’s been a busy two days with stops in Costa Maya, Roatan and a fun sea day filled with activities.
I can’t write much about Costa Maya because I never left the ship but my wife was not really excited about the port. I do advise that if you are stopping at Costa Maya you should book an excursion to the ruins or other activity. Unless you want to shop there really is nothing else to do. We were amazed at how they have built up the port area since our last visit three years ago. There is a VERY large shopping area with a pool area and a few bars to quench your thirst. Of course, Diamonds International and Tanzanite International have large stores in the complex.

From there we headed for Roatan. This island is a BEAUTIFUL island. I had read mixed reviews about it so I was a bit apprehensive but I was amazed. It is a lush, green tropical island with beautiful beaches and friendly people. I really can’t understand how anyone could say that it was not a great port stop. It reminded me of Jamaica without the pushy vendors and no one tried to sell me a bag of smoking material. We did an island tour and a beach day. We went to a nice resort and staked out a cabana and just enjoyed a day in and out of the sun. A delicious lunch was served.

Then there was the busy sea day. The events coordinator invited Trip and me to attend an, in-depth, behind the scenes tour of the ship. Unfortunately it was at the same time as Chef Matt’s first demo. We divided and conquered. Trip went to Matt’s demo and I took the tour. Trip will have some articles and pictures posted shortly but here are a couple, that my wife took, of Matt in action. Everyone really enjoyed his demo and according to my picky wife she said the food was delicious.

The behind the scenes tour was really something I enjoyed. I have a thing for finding out how things work. The piles of dismantled toys from my childhood attest to that. Our first stop was the Epic Showroom and we met the Production Manager, John Lowe. He handles all of the entertainment on board Epic. On most ships the entertainment comes under the control of the Cruise Director but on Epic entertainment is such a major feature that it is its own separate division and is under control of a Entertainment Director who is now onshore. John reports to the Entertainment Director and not the Cruise Director. Epic has many innovations in its Entertainment area. Among those are the automation of functions in the showroom and other venues. The Legends and Blue Man group take a lot of special lighting and acoustics. All of these functions are now computer controlled and the “lighting and sound” people are more computer operators than running a sound and lighting board. The other less glamorous function his people are responsible for is to clean up after The Blue Man Group. It takes over an hour for ten people to mop, sweep and brush down the area after they finish.
Our next stop was the Galley where we were escorted by Executive Sous Chef, Hakim Klala. I’ve done galley tours before but never this in-depth. We were privileged to see all functions in action. We started at the Pass Stations right at the height of lunch. And from there we moved into the bakery and saw all the baking of desserts, breads and other goodies being made.

One area I thought was interesting was the massive amounts of bread that is made each day. If anyone believes that the breads are pre-made or from frozen dough then this picture should change their mind.
This only one of many batches of dough.

We then moved on to meet the Provision Manager, Omar Panchame, for a tour of the food storage areas onboard. I’ve worked in the restaurant business and I’ve never seen “walk-in” coolers and freezers of this size. I would call them “drive-ins”. J




After this we went down in to the lower decks to meet with the Environmental Officer, Mario di Leo and see how the ship handles the massive amounts of garbage that is generated each day. All garbage is separated. What can be burned is incinerated, what can’t is shredded and stored for offload back at Miami. Everything else is recycled. There is a large emphasis on the environment today on all cruise ships and they no longer dump garbage at sea. Large fines have been assessed and the company knows that saving a couple of dollars will only cost them millions later on so waste disposal and recycling are taken VERY seriously. Mario did comment to me that a number of years the Environmental Officer was looked at by other departments as somewhat of a “pain in the rear” but now his word is law when it comes to waste and its handling. I like that.

Our last stop was the laundry. This was an amazing display of automation, organization and good old human power. The sizes of the laundry machines vary from large commercial washers to giant computer controlled washer/dryer units. I’ve always wondered how they keep track of my six pair of underwear, socks and t-shirts when I send them out. Well, those tags they put on them are the key. An individual will take each bag and tag each item to make sure they go back to their rightful owner. Also, make sure your slip is accurate because that is used to “double check” the accuracy. Pressing of shirts pants and other garments are done by a person but with a machine that many people would love to have. It cuts the time down to a few seconds per garment.
The vast amounts of sheets and lines are handled in large machines that dry, press and fold each item in one process that just takes a couple of minutes. It’s a job we don’t see but I really respect the people who work down there. It’s hot but I could see each person was taking pride in their work.

How would you like to do this much laundry three times a day?

Well: It’s six a.m. and I better get this posted and off for another day. Today we are in Cozumel. We have nothing planned but may just grab a cab and hit a beach and do some shopping.

We have seen some shows. The Blue Man Group is excellent even though they sort of creeped out my sister when they came into the audience and stared at her.

We had dinner in the Manhattan Dining room and while food was just fine the orders were totally messed up with us getting the wrong food and a long wait time. Also, they lost my sister's room card when she bought a bottle of wine. All of this caused us to be late to Legends and they would not admit late arrivals. Hopefully we can catch it tomorrow. We see Cirque tonight. Second City was ok but not as good as the performers on the Jewel.

Food overall is pretty good with some home runs and couple of strike outs. The best overall in consistency is O'sheehans with Cagney's a close second. I do think that Betty has been targeted. While most of my sister's and my meals have been pretty good. Betty has been plagued with overcooked and cold food. A little hit and miss.

Oh yes: The noodle bar is very good but don't over order. The portions are huge.

Mike... thanks so much for the great updates! Wish I was there enjoying the fun.

Too bad it sounds as if the food has been a bit hit and miss.

Good morning folks. It is Friday at 7:30 a.m. and we “just” left Cozumel. Our stay turned into an overnight because of high winds. At 5:30 yesterday the Epic tried to move away from the dock but after two hours they gave up. There were 35 – 40 mph westerly winds that hit the Epic broadside and kept her pinned to the dock and the engines and thrusters were not strong enough to safely move us from the pier. We are now heading full speed toward Miami. I have not heard an update on what effect this will have on our arrival time but a 14 hour layover will probably cause some problems. I’ll know more later. Gee: Maybe we’ll get an extra day. Nah: I won’t be that lucky.
I can now reflect somewhat on the ship and the facilities. Norwegian did many things right with this ship but they also did a number of things wrong. The right things are the diverse entertainment that is available onboard. Seven days is really not enough to experience everything from Blue Man Group, Second City, Cirque, Howl at the Moon, Fat Cats, the water slides and all the other functions the ship has to offer.
Last night we attended Cirque Dreams and I can really see where some people love this show and others hate it. From my perspective and opinion the first part of the show was extremely annoying. The falsetto voices and fake French accents drove me nuts and I was looking for an escape route from a show where you are not allowed to get out of your seat. For once in my life I was hoping for a seizure. (just kidding) Then the acrobatics, juggling and other performers took over and it made for an enjoyable evening. I do advise anyone to pay the extra $10 and reserve premium seating. I had the $20 seats and was seated in a booth at the back of tent. This made it almost impossible to view any of the trapeze style artists. Then there was the dinner. Cirque revamped their menu because of complaints about the food. Well, they need to re-revamp. It was the worst meal we’ve had on board. While everything was hot it wasn’t anything resembling “gourmet”. The first course is a lettuce wedge with some sort of dressing that I could not place and a pate or moose of some unknown flavor. The main course was an overcooked piece of filet and two shrimp that were pretty good. The best thing was the dessert. Three different things but however I can couldn’t eat them because they all had berries. My wife and sister said they were delicious.

They also had the right idea in the areas of dining. Perhaps they have too many options but it doesn’t leave anyone without choices. Also: We have done walk-ups to La Cucina (Italian) and both of the no-surcharge restaurants and NEVER had a wait for a table. The Manhattan Room is a great venue and I enjoy the band and entertainment that is presented. Dining and dancing is a concept that many people love and is not available anymore in too many places. Taste is your more laid back and more casual atmosphere but with the exact same menues.
The specialty restaurants are diverse and fairly good in quality. The Italian restaurant was my most disappointing with food that was below Olive Garden in quality. The antipasto plate was a flavorless combination of puree of white beans, two small, tissue thin, pieces of flavorless prociutto, and a couple of sun-dried tomatoes and peppers. The pasta was overcooked and mushy and the fish in the seafood fettuccini had a very strong smell and an equally strong taste and I love fish.

The two meals that stick in my memory are my lamb chops in Cagney’s and the roasted pork loin and butternut squash in Taste. Both of these were perfect. They were well seasoned, cooked perfectly and served hot and fresh. However, as I said earlier, my wife had a target on her back and while the dish I was served was done well her dish was cold, overcooked and/or flavorless. It is hit and miss. The inconsistency is the biggest problem.
The entertainment is very good and if anyone says they are bored on this ship then they have no initiative to find something to do or they are overwhelmed with the choices. We found that there was too much and were unable to see everything. If you require rigid scheduling, by the cruise line, on your cruise than this isn’t for you. You will need to make choices.
The staff on board is first rate. Everyone has been friendly and any and all issues have been addressed and quickly resolved. We had some laundry that hadn’t arrived after 48 hours and one call resolved the issue and the laundry was at our door in 20 minutes.
It’s been mentioned before that the television selections are not good. I agree. They are the worst that I have seen on any ship in my 30+ cruises. Unless you want to watch Spongebob and Dora the Explorer you are relegated to shopping channels, Fox News, MSNBC, CNBC and the Bridge view. The Navigation Channel was removed after the first day due to “technical difficulties” and hasn’t come back. Heck, that’s the one channel I like to watch. It’s nice to know where the heck you are. On this cruise I actually rented a movie for the first time. I was having a bad day and stayed in the cabin and after an hour or so I was ready to put out a contract on Geraldo so I rented “Prince of Persia”. At least it was mind candy for two hours.
I will go into more depth when I return and put my notes and thoughts together but I will have to say that I liked Epic but NCL tried to do too much. My best description would be that they put 45 pounds in a 40 pound sack.
There are many areas that are cramped. The pool deck is very cramped on sea days but there are large areas, in not too great of locations, that are wide open. The kids splash pool is in the logical place where a walk way should be and the slide areas take up most of the pool deck.
Deck Six is major entertainment deck and it is also where the very large casino is. The casino takes up half of the deck and unless you go up to deck 7 you have to walk through it each time you need to go from forward to aft. I don’t mind this but because of the placement of gaming tables the pathways are narrow and at busy times the walk ways are packed with people. In regard to smoke. I am a smoker but I have to agree the design of the casino with the open air atriums going up and down to the other decks causes smoke smell to permeate to the other decks. You can be sitting at the Sushi bar and smell smoke and it can even be smelled in Taste on Deck 5. Bad design.
Then there’s the cabins. Our D3 is fine for two people but three is too many. The New Wave design gives me a claustrophobic feeling and while there are a multitude of “cubby holes” and other storage areas it is hard to organize things. There are actually too many “cubby holes” and this makes it hard to find things. My biggest pet peeve are the closets. One closet is fine but the other two have the hanging bar perpendicular to the door rather than parallel. This makes it VERY hard to find clothes because they are all facing you rather than being able to see all at once. You need to dig through each garment until you find the one you want. As I said earlier, If they reclassify the “Dx” cabins as mini-suites they are definitely doing some false advertising.
The Captain just came on the intercom and announced that we now have 50 to 60 mph winds outside. The ship is handling it well and it is quite smooth. We will be getting into Miami a couple of hours late. It looks like we’ll not get in until 10:00 a.m. I have to now go to Guest Services to change my embarkation. All people with flights before 3 will need to go to guest services.
