Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway - what do you think of the names?

Norwegian Cruise Line ("Norwegian") has selected the winning names for its two new Freestyle Cruising® ships: Norwegian Breakaway, launching in April 2013, and Norwegian Getaway, launching in April 2014. The names were selected as the culmination of its "Norwegian's Cruising for Names" contest held in conjunction with national newspaper USA Today.

Norwegian felt these names best reflected the innovation of the brand along with the freedom and flexibility of the line's signature Freestyle Cruising and invoked the feeling that these ships will provide a "break" at sea from the stress of everyday life. Breakaway is defined as "a departure or break from routine or tradition" and Getaway is defined as "a place where one escapes for relaxation, vacation, etc."

So?? What do you all think of the selections?

Trip September 13th, 2011 11:22 AM

To me they sound perfect for tv jingles.....creative they are not. I think naming anything is important, and, as they say, they missed the boat on this one;( Hate them......

RaceAddict September 13th, 2011 11:24 AM

Don't like either one... Breakaway is the project name, so whoever entered that in the contest fails spectacularly at being creative. And Norwegian Getaway is hardly any better... sounds like a movie title. After the Italian Job, we have the Norwegian Getaway.

fun2cruiz September 13th, 2011 11:28 AM

If they want to name a ship...come on NCL who is doing your creative marketing ???.... How 'bout the "Norwegian Tranquility" ?

Moiraine September 13th, 2011 11:38 AM

Getaway is better than Breakaway. Sounds like you're going to break some bones or something. Ah, no thanks.

Paul Motter September 13th, 2011 11:38 AM

I wrote in another area here that I thought those were the two least likely and least likable names. Hey, it's just one person's opinion, but I think a lot of people will agree with me.

Paul Motter September 13th, 2011 11:48 AM

I agree - how is "Breakaway" ever a good name for a passenger ship? What's the tag line there?

"The ship for the recently divorced"

"Don't trust the guardrails"

"Our smokestack fell in the water"

"Where your husband can take off with the nanny"

"Site of the Next Cougar Cruise"

And Getaway - I also thought of "The Italian Job" immediately. Once again, what is the tag line when you hear "Norwegian Getaway?"

anniegb September 13th, 2011 12:06 PM

Norwegian Tourist Board

The names should be used by the Norwegian Tourist Board to promote short breaks to Norway.

They had 5 names to choose from and the best of those was mediocre, and now they have selected what I consider the two WORST names. They are about as exciting as naming the new ships "Norwegian Ship" and "Norwegian Vessel".

It is laughable to think of executives at NCL kicked back in their offices thinking "yeah, we nailed it this time."

acerrazub September 13th, 2011 07:30 PM

Not names they are titles

Well finally someone has restarted a trend once adhered to by Carnival. Remeber Imagination, sensation, elation, etc??? Remember how we waited breathlessly for copulation, fornication to be added? Well just think..
Norwegian Whichaway
Norwegian NoWayAway
Norwegian WhereAway
Norwegian AintNoWayAway
Norwegian TheyWentThatAway,

How hard is it to come up with something better than Getaway and Breakaway?

Norwegian Mist? Norwegian Midnight Sun

Better yet how about ...... Norway II

Trip September 13th, 2011 07:36 PM

Good to sea ya Al..they obviously thought my NCL Harmony was terrible:)

anniegb September 13th, 2011 07:58 PM

I have just looked at the existing Norwegian Vessel list - names are nice and short.

Following on from the jewel theme - they could have had Norwegian Ruby etc. or Norwegian Moon following on from Norwegian Star etc.

I suppose they were looking for something different, I would have gone for Serendipidity myself.

Annie

BTW - a bit late for me to enter I suppose.

Paul Motter September 13th, 2011 09:19 PM

Hi Al... good to see you!

It is so obvious that there much better names. I actually thought the last Celebrity names were mediocre:

Celebrity Silhouette and Celebrity Reflection. I said they sound more like wristwatches than cruise ships.

BUT - never have I seen a more mediocre effort to be creative than this supposed naming contest.

Pulleeeze... a "naming contest" where they "pick" the name that is the same as the Project name?

That is like holding a "contest" to name your baby boy and you "pick" the fathers name and add "junior."

"We felt it was the name that best exemplified the spirit of our efforts to make a family that bonded and shared familial experiences."

right ..... - who needs ambien with NCL? My job of following the media could not possibly get any more boring than covering a "story" like this.

acerrazub September 13th, 2011 11:31 PM

Hi all

Hi everyone. I simply could not resist putting my two cents in on this mediocre subject :-)

fun2cruiz September 14th, 2011 03:15 AM

HI AL.....I like the "Norway II"...brings back memories of that Grande Dame

FirstCoastCruiser September 14th, 2011 07:05 PM

But then, these are the same people I assume that thought the Epic and its strange design was going to be the next best thing..... hate the names.

Mike M September 14th, 2011 10:50 PM

Getaway just reminds of the Steve McQueen and Ali McGraw movie of the seventies. I keep thinking Sally Struthers will be wandering the hall yelling: "Has anybody seen Rudy!?" (You have to know the movie to get that reference.) :D

Breakaway is just plain bad. It conveys something physically breaking or I get a vision of a teenager with a break out of acne. Hey, my mind works in weird ways. :)

There were far better names they could have chosen and "hopefully" the ships are better than their names. I really don't want another version of Norwegian Epic.

Take care,
Mike

Paul Motter September 15th, 2011 12:44 PM

I don't "like" to beat up on NCL. I like the company but you just can't ignore decisions like this and be a cheerleader all the time.

I just have to say - never have I seen a story like this get so little traction in the press.

Picking names for new vessels can be a big deal if you position it correctly, but hardly any media at all outside of the regular cruise-beat writers even touched this story - and very few of us at that.

Sad.

Trip September 15th, 2011 12:57 PM

Many years ago, when they wanted to make a movie of Selena, the Mexican singer who had died, they ran a big contest for someone to play the lead. Lots of hype, and "all of a sudden" the role went to Jennifer Lopez..wow, what a surprise!!!!!!!

This is how I feel about this contest...people entered names. Some entered the 2 winning names, because, those entrants had no imagination, and, how lucky NCL got, beacuse those two, names were what they wanted... this was not contest.

anniegb September 15th, 2011 01:01 PM

Breakaway is also a brand of chocolate biscuit in UK. :)

gypsygirl911 September 17th, 2011 12:16 AM

Norwegian Revival

Now that's a Name! (the one I put forward) ;)

Paul Motter September 17th, 2011 11:35 AM

The Genting Group, which owns half of NCL and Star Cruises, is also buying up about 30 acres of downtown Miami for which they hope to get approval to build a casino.

They have planned the already with 50 restaurants, 3 hotels, two condo towers, a long swimming pool the size of seven olympic size pools...

Here is the story - with renderings (very impressive): Genting buys remaining Omni debt, reveals resort plans - Business - MiamiHerald.com

It includes the land where the old Miami Herald building sits right now. Guess what their name for this amazing futuristic complex of buildings will be? (drum roll.............................................. ..............)

Resort World!

(I am guessing they had something to do with picking the names of the two new ships). I have heard it sounds more impressive in Chinese.

Trip September 17th, 2011 07:44 PM

It looks like, a little bit of Dubai, in downtown Miami....!!!! Cruisers might decide to really precruise in style, before they board their ship!

mishi30900 September 19th, 2011 12:07 PM

Wow can't believe NCL picked Breakaway and Getaway

As a joke I said to my husband I should pick "breakaway", thought would be funny when the staff were sorting through the names to see the most obvious selection...who would have thought that is what they really wanted - what they already had.

Why have a contest if you already know what you want to name it? I submitted maybe 40 names, and yeah obviously some were just whatever I could think to grasp at the opportunity to win a free cruise, but some were way more inventive than what they picked. I have looked all over and so far I have also seen some really creative names others picked as well.

These were some of the ones I submitted...
Norwegian Drift
Norwegian Element
Norwegian Gala
Norwegian I-land
Norwegian Island
Norwegian Cay
Norwegian Reflection
Norwegian Sojourn
Norwegian Ocean
Norwegian Serenity
Norwegian Moon
Norwegian Diamond
Norwegian Passage
Norwegian Key
Norwegian Sparkle

Cant think of the rest, but I thought Drift sounded cool and would be liked enough to be a runner up...maybe they didnt bother reading them all!

Mike M September 19th, 2011 12:49 PM

I've got a great idea!!! We should change our name from Cruisemates to "Cruise Website and Message Board". :D

Maybe I could get a job at NCL. ;)

The location of the new hotel, casino and convention complex would definitely be convenient for cruisers leaving from Miami.

Take care,
Mike

nmnita September 19th, 2011 03:13 PM

I am wondering why these lines are coming up with some of these less than exciting names. I don't like any of the newer ones truthfully.

Nita

Paul Motter September 19th, 2011 03:21 PM

How about this idea...

We Hold a contest because we want to change the name of the web site from CruiseMates.com --- so we solicit suggestions.

And then we pick - CruiseMates.com!!!!

Wouldn't that be a great surprise??
