Iphone on Ship
I am fairly new to cruising and was just wondering......when they say you can use your iphone with WiFi, is there a charge for using their WiFi? Or can I just switch my iphone to the WiFI setting and have access?
You will incur the same charges to connect your Iphone to the ship's WiFi as you would a computer. It is .75/minute if you pay by the minute. $100 for 250 minutes and $55 for 100 minutes. The speed is not what you would get at home unless you are still on 56Kbps dial-up.
I would also advise you to turn roaming and data off. If you have roaming and data turned on your Iphone will connect and you will be charged for data usage and any calls either incoming or outgoing. The voice rate is $2.95/minute.
yes same charge as they mentioned for wifi thru iphone and ipod-- its best to just leave off on iphone so no roaming charges
If you must have the Internet onboard - or even just email, then its best to use a laptop.
If you really want to use your iPhone do it like this...
Get an Internet acct onboard and log into it with wi-fi through the phone browser. You will have to go to a website and log into the network EVERYTIME you want to check your mail.
But once you are logged in your phone should be able to download your email through the wifi.
As stated, even if you do this it is extremely important that you make sure data roaming is turned off at all times. otherwise, just a few emails can easily cost you $20+ if they contain pictures. The usual cost is about $5 MB (for phone data roaming).
