This new class of Breakaway-plus ship is a hefty 163,000-tons for just 4200 passenger berths
Breakaway-plus will come in 2015 at 163,000-tons, 4200 berths.
Just when we thought the we had seen the end of new ship orders for the meantime, out of the blue comes an announcement from Norwegian Cruise Line that the company has already placed a firm order for a new ship - with financing already in place.
The ship will be 163,000 gross tons and will carry about 4200 passenger berths. This new vessel will be the largest in Norwegian's fleet and by our calculations this will qualify as the second largest cruise ship class in the world, barely beating out Royal Caribbean's Freedom class and Norwegian Epic. Delivery is scheduled for December of 2015.
They certainly surprised everyone with this announcement. I'm thinking that given the larger amount of space it might prove to be better than the 'regular' Breakaway ships. Of course that won't be known for a while yet.
There seems to be a lot of ship building going on in the next few years.
Will the cruiselines be able to fill them all?
