Default my first NCL cruise....

Hi All,

Just got back from my first NCL cruise on the Jewel to the Bahamas. I hate to say it, but I didn't care for the cruise and more than likely will not sail on Norwegian again. Nothing extraordinary happened, so I guess this cruise line is just not for me. The food didn't change much at the buffet at lunch and dinner, and the selections were pretty boring for my tastes. Our cabin stewart was great. We had a mid-ship balcony room which my 9yr old grandson and I liked very much. The tv shows were recordings of the same shows every day. We do spend time in our room, to relax and it's nice to watch some tv. It was a Nickelodian cruise and the Nick Jr channel shows repeated every day. I liked the colors of the ship; pink chairs and purple carpet!! The best thing was the live shows. We both loved all of the ones we went to: The magic/comedy show of Jean Pierre was great. The "fountain" show with the staff members was hilarious! It took 45 - 60 min for room service and the delivery of their $5 pizza. For some reason, whenever we asked for a smoothie drink, we'd usually end up with a different drink - one time we were given a virgin Mudslide instead! Oh, well! It didn't ruin our vacation in the least! We had a good time, but will stick with Royal for future cruises!!

Sorry the line was not up to your expectations. I have sailed the Epic twice, and, really did enjoy the ship. I don't think any line pays too much attention to the tv programing. Most of it is indeed repetitious. Their thinking, I am sure is most people just don't spend that much time in their cabin.

We enjoyed the optional dining venues. The Chinese reatuarants & Noodle Bar, were delicious. So glad you enjoyed the entertainment..I loved seeing SpongeBob dance by the pool.

Your attitude is a good one, and I hope your next cruise is your best cruise

We did do an excursion to Universal Studios Adventure Island. Loved it! we had about 6 hrs there, but, darn it, Jurasic Park was closed. Booked it thru NCL for transportation but purchased our tickets online directly thru Universal. Ok, I hate to say this, but we sailed from New York and the passengers just didn't seem as friendly and when we sail from Miami.

In 2004 our 2nd NCL cruise wasn't that great, it was on the 1st NCLA sailing. I gave NCL another try in 2005 and every cruise since has been good. I now have my 7th cruise booked with them.

Maybe later on you might give NCL another try, one bad cruise doesn't make the cruise line bad.

I had my first cruise with NCL on the Sun back in November and loved it. Some of their excursions leave something to be desired, but other than that, I loved everything else. I think some people just appreciate what some lines have better than others and perhaps should stick to those lines. It's not really a bad reflection of the cruise line... it just does not fit your needs. I like your attitude about things and I hope you'll have a better time next cruise.

We've been on several NCL cruises and while we found them to be okay, it was personally not our favorite. We did the NCL Pride of America in Hawaii and found the ship okay, the food was disappointing, but the staff was wonderful. But that's the great thing about cruising; there is something out there for everyone and the fun is trying them all until you find one that's best for you. What one person loves, another will hate. Some people are Carnival cruisers, while others prefer Celebrity.

Glad you didn't let this cruise turn you off to cruising and are willing to give another cruise line a chance to meet your expectations.

Default Cruising with NCL

I've been on three cruises with NCL and have enjoyed them all. My last was on the Epic. The entertainment there was top notch. Got to do a behind the scenes tour and that was very informative. You'll find that there are some people that are just NCL fans and don't cruise on any other lines. One couple we met were on their 37th NCL cruise. They were on the Epic just so they could visit the Ice Bar!

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy NCL as much as you have on other lines. It can be a matter of timing and personal taste. That's why it's great to have so many choices in cruising. I hope your next cruise, on whichever line you choose, is more enjoyable.

For me, NCL has been my overall favorite line. I love the Freestyle concept, which now has spread to most lines, the diverse entertainment and multiple restaurants. I also budget for the additional charge restaurants. For an additional $100/pp you can have one of the best dining experiences at sea.

I personally found Epic not to my liking. Not in what was available in the way of food or entertainment. I just didn't like the ship itself. The layout, crowded pool deck, traffic pattern and cabins were the least favorite of any ship I've sailed, and I've sailed a lot of them.

Book another cruise on another line and enjoy!

Take care,
Mike

I have been on 5 NCl cruises; first 2 with the old Norway & last 3 on the GEM
which I love since I live on Long Island & easy to get to.

While I cannot speak to the other ships in their line, I found the Gem personnel to very very friendly & helpful. The shows at nite are so varied & while food is always a contenious subject, have usually found something to my liking.

Their meet & greets are a great way to meet folks also.

A question for those in the know. Since all cruise lines sub-contract their tours to local companies, how much variation can there be in tours between the different lines? I had never thought about this, since I am always totally focused on the next cruise. I know that tours come and go, but that's about all I know.

Hi

I was not enthused by the Bahama itinerary either. NCL has other ships with different Itineraries which I truly enjoyed.

Try the Eastern, Southern or Western caribbean or Bermuda. I also loved my Panama Canal cruise, our Alaskan trip, Hawaiian cruise, and the repositioning cruises which were great.
