How is age determined on NCL Cruises?

We're cruising in a few months and one of our family members is turning 18 the following week. We would like her to be able to spend time with the rest of us around the bars and other adult-only places, but we don't know how to get around the age requirements. Is the information on the ship taken from our passports, or is it on a form that we fill out (aka that we could lie and say that she is already 18). Save me the trouble of "that's against the rules," I know it is. I simply want to have the best experience on our ship.

Ages are based on the official documentation you provide - the passports or if allowed, the drivers license and certified birth certificate. When you check in for the cruise they verify the information. Cruise cards are marked to identify the age of the person when it comes to drinking age. You may not realize it, but they are. It is done by the printed codes on the card, or sometimes by holes being punched in the card.

However, if the person turns of legal age during the cruise you can go to guest relations and see if they'll update the person's status.

Cheers.

Wouldn't it be simpler and more legal to change the cruise date?
If you fluff dates and something happens, who are you going to blame?
Why would she necessarily want to be at a bar when there are teen venues with people her age to hang out with?

Unfortunately the cruise date is set. I've been talking with past NCL cruisers who said in terms of the adult areas of the ship they don't ID very often (it especially helps that she could pass for 25 easily), so for that we will be okay. Thank you all for the info.
