Default NAUTICA, BLACK SEA (ATHENS TO ISTANBUL), JULY 2, 2007

We are just booking this wonderful cruise and I can't find a thread! The itinerary is great: Athens and Santorini, Greece; Yalta, Odessa and Sevastopol, Ukraine; Sochi, Russia; Constanta, Romania, Nessebur, Bulgaria; and Kusadasi & Istanbul, Turkey. The cruise begins in Athens and ends with an overnight in Istanbul. I don't know of any other cruise that features more Black Sea Ports; most of the others offer one or two, with the rest of the ports in Italy and Greece.

Let us know if you're aboard,
Charlotte

just returned from this cruise. It was a great cruise and a great ship. Be careful in Romania we had eight passengers robbed there. Purse snatchers.

Thanks a million for the tip on Romania! We really are looking forward to the cruise. On other threads people have mentioned how hot it was. Please tell me if you thought the heat was unbearable. We've been in Athens twice in the summer and thought it was hot, but OK.

Additionally, did you fly out of the Istanbul airport? We did several years ago and the security was much laxer there than at other places. Do you think that airport security and screening was adequate?

__We went on this cruise in September and found it very interesting and informative. Be sure to book the excursion to Stalin's Dacha (in Sochi) well ahead of time as it sells out quickly. It was my favorite excursion, perhaps because the place is so laden with history. Many of the ports you will see are in their touristic infancy, which we found charming. Be assured, however, they know about Euros and $$, which are the two currencies we used. ________________

Hi Mamalux,

Which ship were you on? What did you do in the other ports?

We were on the Nautica, which makes this run twice a year. We booked Oceania's tours for all Russian/Ukranian ports, which was a good thing, since their tourism industry is practically non-existent. O's tour to the Roman fortress of Histria (in Constanta, Romania) is definitely not worth taking (they obviously haven't seen the original or they wouldn't call those meager excavations the Romanian Pompeei!!!). Getting there was an experience because it allowed us to see the very primitive Romanian villages on the way. Nessebur, Bulgaria, is a quaint little town, easily accessible, no guide(or tour) necessary. In Turkey, Istanbul as well as Kusadasi, guides and taxis are easily available for better prices than the ship's tours.

Default Sochi, Odessa, Yalta

Hi, we are just booking this cruise with P&O and wonder if you can tell me if you can visit Sochi, Odessa and Yalta without doing an organised excursion.

When we went to St Petersburg, you needed a Russian visa if you wanted to do things on your own, so we didn't bother, just did the organised tour.

Any tips gratefully received

Jean

We did the tours organized by Oceania in all three places, because it included the visa. We felt we had made the right decision. Russian tourism is in its infancy; though we saw a few cabs waiting at the dock the drivers could hardly respond when asked in English. We took the 1/2 day tour in Odessa and then explored the city on our own- a fantastic experience; no visa needed since we were in the Ukraine. It is advisable to book the excursion to Stalin's Dacha ahead of time, as the number of participants is limited, and the tour fills up fast.
