We are looking at Nautica in September 2010. I was reading Fodor's book. They say many wonderful things about Oceania. One knock is that shipboard charges (drinks & internet) are higher than average. Perhaps they feel these are out of line with what Oceania should change. Is this a fair assessment?

Alaska 2014 - haven't picked a cruise yet
Carnival: Glory 2004, Destiny 2008, Splendor 2009, Freedom 2011, Valor 2012
Celebrity: Summit 2011
Princess: Ruby 2010, Caribbean 2013
Internet is expensive even with the package deals
Drinks ..well they seem pretty close to other mass market lines
Drinks are not cheap on any cruise line anymore
But they do allow you to bring your own wine/alcohol for use in your cabin unlike other lines
Thanks - I think not having to pay extra in the alternative dining restaurants can cover some (if not all) of the extra expense 8)

Firstly, the bars and their charges cannot be attributed to Oceania. There is an awarded contract for the bar operations where they are at liberty to charge and deliver whatever they feel like. And when this system commenced we were the first to note that the meagre portions and the high prices were not to our liking. I don't mind paying excessive prices for a good drink but when the pouring is miniscule and the price at max there is something wrong. Oceania may wash their hands of this problem but it may and should be affecting them for we for two will not sail their line until this problem is addressed and corrected. Nobody likes to feel that they are being made a fool of.
If I am building a house and subcontract the plumbing or electrical I am responsible for their work as well as my own. Oceania should not hide behind contractors. (Not that they are the only line that tries it.)

I recall that was my first cruise with the "Project Athena" system that allowed us satellite email, pay-phones and television !! WOW, calling home as we transited the Straits of Hormuz.
In port, a cell-phone or PDA should work... but they are LOS (Line of Sight), so they should fail the moment you're over the horizon from a cell-phone antenna. I know they ARE restricted from classified materials spaces.
The previous shipmate covered the current issues of cellphone contracts and browsing the Internet. Just amazing how far we've come in 15 years
