The truth is that we are trillions of dollars in debt and cannot afford another war! We have Defense spending yet I have not seen in my lifetime where the forces of the U.S. military have ever been used to defend us. The fact is that no nation would be foolish enough to invade the United States because the populace is well armed and the enemy would find a rifle behind every rock.

The only time in the last 40 years this country was without debt was during the Clinton years when we wasn't engaged in a war of any kind. When Clinton sent out troops to Bosnia, we once again started to accrue debt and it has been climbing ever since. War is expensive. Expensive in the lives of our youth, expensive in terms of money to operate, and expensive to our relations with other countries throughout the world.

I agree with what you said here, however it is not invasion that the government is concerned about, it is oil. The reason we keep trying to intervene in that area of the world is to insure that we have the oil we need.

We have all the oil we need right here in North and South America...we don't need middle eastern oil.

I find it so very sad that when the planes fly over NY the American people want someone to fight their battles, but when all is at peace, the military is to expensive.

I guess that is the American way.

Maybe, if you count oil shale, and that is a difficult proposition.

At our current rate of usage (6.8 billion barrels a year) we will use up the current petrolium supply in 24 years:

FactsPlusLogic: How much oil do we have left?

Now, using that same source we can find it is estimated that if we include oil shale the we will not run out for over 200 years. Add in other factors it could be around 300 years.

The latter figures are what the politicians on the Right use to argue that we have plenty of oil - WRONG! Shale oil is radically different that what we think of as oil and it is very expensive and environmentally disastrous to reclaim it. Many of the shale oil reserves lie under developed areas, what are we going to do in the future, tear down cities to find oil?

You and I have felt the effects of oil being harder to find at the gas pump. What will our Grandchildren have to deal with? This is why I side with the Liberals on this one, we need to get off the oil teat for our own national security.

By your contention it must be okay for another country to interfere in the affairs of the United States .

Not all of us. I believe that we should have a strong military at all times.

Manuel, I was just thinking about you. I have been nice to him all morning, and he says that.

I don't know what else to do.

Paul,

Your comment about Japan and Germany, compared with our ally's attack on a United States Navy vessel during peacetime is non sequitur.

A state of war existed between the United States and Germany and Japan.

Isreal was a United States ally at the time of its unprovoked attack on USS Liberty AGTR 5 as it was sailing in International waters.

I can suggest several history books on this subject that would be available at your local library, for further reading.

You may find USS Liberty survivor's views on our ally interesting......
