Default Cuba

In January 2013 and February 2013 there will be "humanitarian" cruises from New York to Cuba .

I know several people who are going . If you were able to travel to Cuba would you do so ?

The Cuban embargo is a ridiculous vestige of the Cold War and needs to go away. It serves no purpose other than possibly keeping the Cuban people in tyranny. I'd love to visit Cuba. I wish it was a routine port for Caribbean cruises.

This is a subject we have debated here for years. I have a defunct magazine from 93, called South Florida, and one issue was devoted to what will happen, when.....quite an interesting situation, as Cuban Americans are poised to immediately go into action when the time comes. I am sure many things stated in this dated magazine have changed, but for many still, people want to home, maybe not to stay, but to see what their parents/grandparents have spoken about for years.

I would go in a heartbeat, preferably on a ship, till better infrastructure is built for the many tourists who will book a trip. I have seen the educational tours offered, and they are quite pricey, and you have little time to investigate other than the itinerary given.

Well I finally made it to the Caribbean earlier this year - and don't shoot me I was not impressed. Honestly it was not worth the flight time

I did manage to see a couple of places I have always wanted to see but so pleased I was not spending 1 week on any island - I am beginning to think I may be jaded from travelling too much or maybe there was just too much tat.

Havana has always been on my list and an enforced change to my winter travel plans may result in me spending 2 weeks there in Nov - 1 week Havana/ 1 week on the beach chlling.

I have heard so many mixed reviews on the island - I wonder if I would get bored. The flight time from the UK means I would probably spend at least 2 weeks there.

I do agree that this embargo of Cuba is so divisive - who benefits ? The Bay of Pigs etc was a lifetime ago. (Sorry I don't mean to get political)

BTW just curiosity - if there is no embargo on US citizens visiting Vietnam, why the continued embargo on Cuba??

I will visit Argentina next year.

Annie

That is a significant part of it for me. My country made it's peace with Vietnam yet we still play this silly game with a vibrant island full of natural resources and great people just 90 miles away. I can book a tour of Vietnam right now, online. Yet to visit Cuba I have to use some cloak-and-dagger methods or get approval from the State Department.

Maybe, since the US was unsuccessful in the Bay of Pigs, it was implemented to save face? A, "I'll show you" attitude that, has played out sadly for so many, all these years. Crazy stupid

I too can't wait to someday visit Cuba, it would make a great port stop for a cruise. I hope in my life time it happens, time will tell.

I suspect The Bahamas must be quite concerned about an eventual embargo lift, because they know that a LOT of people would much prefer a 3 or 4 night cruise from south Florida to Cuba than to Nassau or Grand Bahama. Firstly, it would be something new and different, and secondly it is a more interesting island (Cuba).

Also......on a longer eastern itinerary, Cuba could be the last stop before the port...the distance would make it doable.

I don't know about the Bahamas, but ending the embargo would threaten tourism in Jamaica.

One of the reasons the US is so friendly to Jamaica is that it is near to a main shipping channel for the Panama Canal. So is Cuba.

Without the phony baloney embargo, cruise tourists could go to Cuba instead of Jamaica.

Of course, Cuba doesn't have the infrastructure to support large cruise ships plus Castro can't stand them. He has complained that all they do is drop off their garbage and leave without spending much money.

Come to think of it, it is our duty as Americans to cruise to Cuba. It might upset Castro enough to stroke out!
