After five minutes of him saying absolutely nothing, but rhetoric, I gave up.

Take care,

Luanne...when is Jim coming home (just kidding)

If you have not already viewed it, PBS Frontline had an incredible 3 part series entiled " The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela" (go to their website). that you will find contains many common themes that Mandela & Obama encountered as they both try to unite a divide. racial. Country against the backdrop of extreme opposition on both the left and right of both White and Black interest groups

Hopefully it will give you some context when you come across videos or articles of this tenor

With today's news cycles, a crisis will happen within the next 72-96 hours that will take our focus off this topic (Royal Family birth or Kim Kardashian splits with Kanye)

Fyi.,,if you come across a Sarah Palin or Michelle Bachman video regarding the events, please post in the interest of "fair and balance"

Venice, I am with Jim, and we will be back in two weeks.

I didn't think much of the video, and sure didn't think about Palin when I was viewing it.

Lakers Fan I know all to well about the former Panthers.

Not to mention, aren't there at least two Black Panther groups now - neither as the one back in the 60s.

After the death of Eldridge Cleaver the Panthers changed direction .Todays Panthers refer to themselves as Black Nationalists.

Luanne...Jim's career in the Army is a great source to bring context to this situation...the post Vietnam volunter military is a perfect example of how young men (regardless of color, politics, disadvantage background) receive structure, discipline, teamwork, educational opportunity and the GI bill...you also learn not only how to use a firearm, but how to respect it. Being deployed to a war zone has a way of bringing folks of different races together

I know all about the Black Panthers also. I lived in Oakland in the 80's...Huey Newton' was buried in the Church I belong to at the time. Google what then CA Gov Ronald Reagan did when the Black Panthers legally marched into the State House armed with AK-47's....funny thing, the NRA was really silent then

I was witness to a cold blooded murder of a police officer in probably 1974. I saw a black panther blow the head off in broad daylight.

It is something I will never forget, although I have tried.

Do you recall the militant group The Young Lords ? They were a group of Puerto Rican militants .
The leader of the organization was Felipe Luciano .After leaving the group he became a newscaster on NBC-TV .His #2 man became and still is a NYC newscaster .
The lawyer for the group as well as a member was Geraldo Rivera .
Nobody has ever said that any of the above should be in jail .

I was in California when Nixon ordered a 7PM curfew during a Panther trial. Huey Newton did a lot of good things for the people of Oakland as I'm sure you know.
The problem was that they were the first group of black people who aggressively fought for their legal rights and white society did not know how to react .
White society was used to the "Stephin Fechit" type of black man.

I don't remember the group. Funny I was just reading on line about Geraldo's semi nude picture he posted. What a joke he is.

We talk about Eldridge Cleaver and Huey P. Newton but the real radical of the group was H. Rap Brown. Did some classes with him at UCLA in '68.

In 1969 I was working in NYC with an aunt of H.Rap Brown .He came to meet her for lunch one day .She introduced him by his real first name .I had no idea who he was until after he left.
Coincidentally at the same company was a relative of Angela Davis ,a relative of Mark Rudd and the great uncle of future actor Jake Gyllenhall and his actress sister Maggie.

And to this day I am in love with Angela Davis

H. Rap Brown spoke on campus in 1970...scared the living crap out of me and almost incited a riot with the KKK

Hard to believe, one time Geraldo was a real journalist and received a major award for his investigation of abuse of residents at Willowbrook State Hospital on Staten Island

The Black Panthers launched a free breakfast/lunch program in the basement of my Church to feed pre school and grades K-3. They knew if they fed a hungry child was the best way to nourish their minds...did you know that the Black Panther HDQ in Oakland was next door to the Northern CA chapter of the Hell's Angels which was located on Fruitvale Avenue location of the BART station that in 2007 was the site of the famous shooting of a Black man that was in handcuffs..cop claimed he thought he had fired his stun gun when it was in fact his service revolver (the basis of the movie that happen to be released the week before the Zimmerman verdict)

Johnny Cochran of OJ trial fame made his "bones" defending the Black Panthers...the Panther's formed Neighborhood Watch units and monitored police radio frequencies to show up with AK-47's and cameras when the Oakland PD conducted "stop and frisk" check
points...those were tense times

I finally got a chance to Google, and I was having a hard time understanding what they were trying to do. I did like the idea of them working for the elderly, but couldn't find out if what they did helped.
