Default The Devil Made Me Do It!

If you were in charge of a radically right-wing state legislature in a dead red state, would you jump at the chance to have a Christian group erect a privately-funded monument to the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the State House?

You would? Well, so did the fools in Oklahoma, with the oh-so-predictable results. The papers are full of stories about the groups that are now demanding "equal space" on the lawn, most notably the Satanists who want to erect a monument to the devil, and another group known as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. I can't wait to see their entry.

Are we surprised? Really? It is amazing how the far right believes in freedom of speech, as long as its their speech. Well, look at the bright side: when the lawn gets filled up with all the various monuments to every sect, cult and wackadoodle splinter group, maybe the great state of Oklahoma can turn the place into a tourist attraction and sell tickets. Maybe have a gift shop to sell miniature replicas of the monuments ("collect 'em all!").

After all, having done something completely stupid, they ought to be able to make a few bucks on the deal. That's what government is all about, isn't it?

I have been away for awhile. I see you are still attacking southern states. Have you got them all now, or did you miss one?

While I don't agree with mocking individual states I do agree with AR on not allowing privately funded religious monuments on any government building or grounds.

I am completely against it. The display of the Ten Commandments in courthouses and statehouses is something that should not be allowed. The Ten Commandments are not the laws of the land and should not be construed as such.

The only "commandments" that are criminal in nature are 5 (Thou shalt not kill) 7: (Thou shalt not steal) 8: (Thou shall not bear false witness) and "maybe" 9 and 10: (Thou shalt not covet.......) depending on what translation of "covet" you believe.

Otherwise the others are just the religious beliefs of Jews and Christians and cannot be part of secular law and are not allowed by the constitution.

If displays of passages of the Koran or Bhagavad Gita, or any other non-judeo-christian book were allowed, there would be an uproar.

My answer is to separate Church and State and have none of them allowed.

Take care,
Mike

I agree with that 100%.

As a matter of fact, that is the way I thought that this country was run.

All a matter of perception. I'm against stupidity and I tend to call it out wherever I find it. I agree with Mike and Manuel, but mostly it is absolutely boggling to me how absolutely unable so many people are to see just one jump ahead on the checkerboard.

Your personal beliefs aside, how shortsighted do you have to be to think you can do something like this without every sect wanting a piece of the action?

Another thought would be for the people who believe in the 'Ten Commandments' to actually follow them instead of displaying them.

I wonder what will happen when one of the so-called Christian states is out voted by Muslims and the illegal "monuments" are replaced?

Why don't the Constitutionalists ever chime in on how it is fundamentally wrong for religious monuments to be place on government property?

Or do they only want the Constitution when it serves their private agendas?

That is exactly what most people want.
