does any one remember the old mermoz? we cruised on it twice back in the early 70s and enjoyed the french ambience. the food was superb. on the second cruise degalles daughter was on board along with dozens of men wearing the legion of honor, they had flown in on the concorde for this trip. i guess the captain got nervous as he ran the ship into the dock at one port and a cabin above water had a hole the size of basketball. the captain also like to sing evenings to entertain the guests. it was very french, very little english was spoken, but we did not care as we were in love and the french understood!
I cruised the MS Mermoz out of San Juan, PR in 1986 on a Halley's Comet cruise. Several Caribbean ports and a visit to Venezuela. I recall the champagne welcome and free wines at meals. Traditional french service. Very few English speaking persons, but it did not matter. Everyone was in formal dress and the cruise was wonderful. They would turn off all of the ship lights at night to increase night vision and make it easier to see the comet.
