Sunbird cruise
We began our cruise on Jan 10/04.We arrived @ Toronto airport at 4:30am for our 7:45am flight to Barbados. The flight was approximately 5 hours &
was uneventful. When we arrived in Barbados we were whisked away by bus straight to the cruise ship Sunbird. Our luggage was delivered to the ship from the airport &
delivered directly to our room. Our check-in was fairly quick & they took our first picture as we were going to our room.
Our room was very quaint, 2 single beds(which we pushed together to make double).A decent size bathroom ,2 closets, & a dressing table. Our cabin steward was excellent
& he was very efficient,he always put our room together right away & pushed our beds together every night.
The ship has an excellent layout, all the main areas were on the top 5 floors. The 4th floor had the dining room ( not too elegant but very nice),also the pursers desk ,wine room &
gift shops. The 5th floor had the CanCan lounge, the casino, the Clipper bar & the Oklahoma lounge. The 7th floor held the disco & a kids area. The pools were on the 9th deck as
well as 2 bars. There was a beautiful mast bar on the 10th level & even higher up was the Chart room,it was gorgeous.
The ship is a British ship so all monies were in pounds (it was 2.3 x's higher than canadian funds).
The Sunbird ship is a nice ship & we enjoyed our stay. Although there is not alot of activity ongoing during the daytime (for those who stay onboard). The activity at night is terrific. The
Cancan lounge has cabaret acts, comedy, & musicals. The Oklahoma lounge is mostly for "game shows" & dancing. The Neptune Disco is a terrific night spot.
The dining room menu was nice & not too extavagant. Approximately 5 main entrees / evening. The pool area also had a dining are for buffet style. It has the same meals as the main
dining room at night. The ships crew was helpful & loved to have fun & show all passengers a great time. The band Oasys was terrific & they played a great variety of music.

The island were beautiful..we went to Aruba,Curacao,Margarita,Grenada, & Tobago.
Aruba:we did alot of shopping ,& found it was a great place to but gifts & souvenirs .In the afternoon we went on a tour.It was $10.00pp & we went all around the area. The natural
bridge is absolutely beautiful, We ended our tour at Palm Beach.
Curacao: we again did some shopping & took a walking tour by ourselves, in the afternoon we again took a taxi to the Sea Aquarium. The Sea Aquarium is a must see.I was able to
see alot of the sea mammals & I even touched & fed a nurse shark.
Margarita: we arrived early to this island & found it was alittle intimidating( at first),alot of army personnel were in the area but as the day went on more little huts were opening & alot
more people had arrived. We spent most of the day on the beach,& it was lovely.
Grenada: we walked into the town & I had my hair braided $20.00. The people there seemed almost too interested in the tourists. We went on a tour in the afternoon. We went to a
small shop & had a look at the local spices. From there we went to a beautiful waterfall & small pool, absolutely beautiful. We even saw a monkey. Then on to the beach, and alot of fun
in the ocean.
Tobago: this was a very hot day so we did not go too far. There was not alot of shopping but there is a botanical garden. Our companions went to the beach in the afternoon & say it was
the most beautiful beach. There were beautiful girls doing the limbo & dressed in costumes. They went on a glass bottom boat & saw all types of sea mammals.

The day of our departure we had to be awake early (8am) to go through customs & claim our luggage(9:30am). It was not a long process & it was fairly easy. The buses to take us to the
airport arrived at 11:00 & our flight was scheduled for 2:55. Our flight home was approximately 5 1/2 hours but it was uneventful .
All in all our cruise was very nice, & we would recommend it for anyone who is seeking a quiet & relaxing cruise with lots of islands to view.

Re: Sunbird cruise
Sassy, thanks for your review of your Sunbird cruise. My sister (Wiarton), my husband and I (London, formerly Paisley) are going, as you know, in March. Did you take the drink package? And was that a good thing to do?

sassy January 20th, 2004 06:54 AM

Re: Sunbird cruise
we did not take the drink package as everyone in the cabin has to have the same package & I do not drink too much. Alot of people do buy it though probably b/c it is british & you have to convert our money to theirs to figure out drink prices but they were quite reasonable.

Re: Sunbird cruise
Just read your cruise review. My husband, Daughter and 11 year old grandson were on the same cruise, same dates. Agree with your review wholehearedly. To add: this was our 2nd cruise on this ship but the first with Daughter & Grandson. We were very pleased with the activities for our grandson, he came back with so many hats, a basketball, t shirt & medal, needless to say he enjoyed himself.
First thing we did on returning was book for two weeks in the Med in September, value for money this ship cannot be beat.
Happy sailing.

Re: Sunbird cruise
that is really neat...we saw you guys everyday. In fact we went on the same plane. We were behind you in the long line to get our boarding passes in barbados. I had braids in my hair...we landed in Toronto. So how is your dog??LOL

Re: Sunbird cruise
Yes I remember you, small world. The dog was very quiet for a few days, not barking, but the kennel looked after him well. The dog belongs to our daughter and Grandson, usually when they go away we move into their house to take care of it, so this time he was a bit put out.
This cold is hard to take after that lovely Caribbean weather, Where are you planning to go next?
As I said in my last posting this ship is hard to beat for Value, we were on the RCL Legend of the seas in Oct/Nov for two weeks had a great time but prefer the ambience of the Sunbird.
Have a great day.
