Can anyone tell me what the seal on the bow of Princess ships represents? It is a rising sun and I don't know what it symbolizes. Any ideas would be appreciated. You can find a picture of it on Bart de Boer's website (http://psp.club.tip.nl/) right on the homepage (thanks Bart).
The rising sun is in fact a symbol from P&O (parent of Princess Cruises). It is actually the top part of P&O's coat of arms. The official coat of arms is four symbols (the lion of Britian, the dragon of the Orient, the kangaroo of Australia, and the elephant of India) set on each quadrant of the P&O houseflag (whose colors are from Spain and Portugal, the P (for "Peninsular" of P&O)).
The coat of arms is on display on a stairway landing on Pacific Princess. I was looking at it one night on the way back from dinner - I got back to my cabin, and the next day's Princess Patter had a history of the P&O coat of arms (so I didn't really know all this myself ).
I would assume the coat of arms is on display on the other ships of the fleet. That and the portriat of Her Majesty the Queen are probably standard gear on these British ships...P&O has a stong sense of tradition, so I would think they would have these two items on each ship.
I think Kevin is onto something. My first reaction was the crest of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, a French society recognizing cullinary excellence of which Princess Cruises is a member, but I don't have a picture in which it's recognizable.
Well, I looked at close-up picture of the bow of Pacific Princess that I took this summer. On the Pacific, they aren't stars - it looks like gold braided rope (not real rope of course - a "picture"). I was looking at Bart's website and his photo of Dawn Princess - I had all I could do to make out the sun on the bow let alone what was underneath! I would assume what you were looking at was the "braided rope" which could look like individual pieces (or stars) if you weren't looking at a clear picture. I have no reason to believe that the seal is different on the other ships (but, you never know....)
