Anyone Cruising the Grand May 20th?

Hi...Won't be long before our 1st Princess Cruise on the Grand. We heard from one couple also cruising on May 20th. If anyone else is on the same ship, please drop us a line.

We are definetly looking forward to our mini-suite and Princess.

Our family is cruising on the Grand May 20th! We are 3 (our son is coming ....age 19, college freshman). We also have a minisuite on D deck. This is my 15th cruise. I can't wait! We are staying 2 pre cruise nites in Ft Lauderdale..(either Amerisuites or Embassy...depends on the cost). Have a great cruise...

Re: Anyone Cruising the Grand May 20th?

Hi! My husband and I will be on the Grand on May 20th. This is our first time to go on a cruise.

I am a little concerned though, because we booked an inside cabin. It seemed like such a good deal and we thought we would rather spend our money on shore excursions. (He likes to Golf)

Since we've never been, we really don't know what to expect to spend. How many things are there to do? How much should we be prepared for??

This trip is in celebration of our 21st Anniversary, as well as,
a celebration of my Graduation in May,from college!

However, from reading all the messages here, I'm starting to think I should have booked an outside room at least.

Also,is there a part of the ship that is better than another? Such as, middle as opposed to back or front?

Hi Tauni...

First and foremost, congratulations on both counts!! You deserve a cruise! <grin>

Do not worry about your accomodations. You will be fine and have a wonderful vacation. You will not be spending a lot of time in your stateroom anyway. Typically, the deals are better on the inside cabins, and many chose those and invest the difference in other activities.

There has been much written about room location. In my opinion, there is very little difference, particularly on a ship as huge as the Grand. We were in the last cabin aft last year and almost all the way forward this year, and I could tell no difference in movement.

Have a fanastic voyage. I look forward to your observations when you return.

Re: Anyone Cruising the Grand May 20th?

Hello Tauni....My wife and are both 47 years of age and she too is at college completing her Master's Degree. So much for that.

It is nice to see some other couples on the same cruise. I read that you have a few concerns. Let me discuss the concern about an inside or outside cabin. That is really up to each individual. The inside cabins aren't that bad if you plan to stay out of the room for long durations of time and not retire so early at night. Our choice is definetly a room with a balcony. Once we tried the room with a balcony, we were hooked. There are words to describe the peacefulness out on the deck. We have breakfest on the deck in the morning, maybe an afternoon snack, then before bed the sound of the water and open air is undescribable. But, there is a massive premium for that. Just to have a balcony adds an extra $2000 to our cost compared to what a couple pays for an inside cabin and everything else is identical, except for the room. You should be fine this first time. Enjoy everything there is on the ship and on shore. I think you will be in heaven with cruising. Most people feel the middle part of the ship is the best, but we haven't noticed that much difference. I would advise bringing a pair of the wristbands they sell in the travel shops for sea sickness. Most of the time you don't feel a thing, but just to be safe, the wristbands work to prevent the motion sickness, at least they work on us.

You will love the shore excursions. They average, depending upon the excursion, $25 to $65 per person. As far as how much more money you will need depends upon your vacation style. As you know, nost of the food is included, however, alcoholic beverages are not. So you will have to allow for that if you decide to have that type of beverage. You will also need to allow for any gambling you want want to do in the casino and any shopping. Again, each couple's spending habits are different. I know in addition to the cruise, we have averaged about another $1200. That included some beverages, gambling, shore excursions and shopping. That could be lower or higher depending upon your interests and financial situation.

You will find tons of activities on ship and off. We hardly ever sleep.

Anyway, I have taken up too much of your time already. If you have any more questions, just ask. I also have a video on the Grand Princess that you are more than welcome to borrow if you want to view the ship. I would be more than happy to mail it to you. It really is a beautiful video on the ship and its activities.

One final note...If you weren't aware, you can pre-register for shore excursions and fill out immigration documents on the Princess website ahead of time before the cruise. This will save a lot of time when you arrive at the port.

Hopefully we can all meet at some point. We are in a mini-suite on the dolphin deck.

Warmest regards,

Dave and Loni

We just found out today by logging on the Princess web site they we were assigned a cabin. We got upgraded from a BF to a BB-we are quite happy with this. Do u think there is a chance that this could change by the time we go on the ship? Can they downgrade us? I dont think they can but who knows. Just wondering

We are also sailing on May 20 and counting down the days. It is our 6th cruise, but the first with Princess. We booked in MiniSuite. The thought of going back to a cabin without a balcony sounds devastating! It is our 23rd Anniversary on the 20th and we will celebrate with our daughter 20, son (22) and his wife. Can't wait to go!! We are on the Dolphin deck but I have read about the balconies not being very private. I don't really think that will be an issue for us, but it seems to be for other people. It will be GREAT... I just know it will!!

Re:Location on board/cabin choice

Sounds like we already have a terrific group sailing on the Grand 5/20. We all should meet in the wheelhouse bar (everyone has good things to say about this bar) and say Hi.

This is our 2nd Princess cruise & first on the Grand.

As far as location on the ship. We have sailed 15 times and we prefer mid deck/mid ship. Since this ship is so,large & stable I think it may not be much different from one area to another.
We sailed on the Voyager (2/00) and found to be like sitting in our living room...no movement (Grand is smaller).

The rear/lower decks of the ship are the most stable, which is why the diningrooms are always in this spot!

We decided to do an AC cat (AB & AA were waitlisted) & mainly because this cat was discounted and we really wanted a minisuite w/balcony. Maybe we will be upgraded to a suite! Who knows.
As far as inside/outside...here's my take on this...cabins in both are the same size & same ammenities only difference is a window....big deal...if you are not claustraphobic you will not care EXCEPT if daylight is a must. We actually sleep much better in an inside cabin. The addition of the balcony is terrific for privacy & a guaranteed lounge chair in the sun! Since we have our 19 year old son with us the suite makes it comfortable....ALTHOUGH we feel OK in an inside cabin as well....especially when you want to do a lot of excursions...the difference in price from inside cabin to outside w/balcony can pay for all your excursions & bartab!

Try all catagories and see which one makes you the happiest then keep cruising!!!!! Can't wait to meet all of you!

My wife, two sons (4 and 2) and I are counting the days untill May 20. We booked a room at Amerisuties for the night of the 19th. It's much easier to fly down a day earlier and rest at the pool with a nice pina colada. See you there!

We too are going 5/20! Our second cruise (first on Dawn P. to So Caribbean -- had an incredible time and got us hooked on cruising!). Hubby is 32 and I am 30 so we are the young kids at the table. See you there. We booked in midship Carbibbe deck and did not want an upgrade because my TA told me some of the suites are a bit more "bouncy" in bad weather. I wonder if you can refuse an upgrade if you don't want it. Katherine and Greg
