Southern Caribbean & Monkeys

I am sure I read on this board that on one of the islands on the southern itinarary it was possible to hand feed monkeys, is this true or am I finally going mad. Any information would be great, also any other things not to be missed whilst doing the southern caribbean we are on the Dawn, Feb 2002. having not done this before we are unsure of whats available we love thing like stingray city (caymans) dolphin swims, shopping and general sightseeing. Is it o.k. to go it alone or should we stick with the ships excursions. Thanks.
Debbie.

Hi Debbie,
You didn't mention what islands you are visiting. Last year we were on Ocean Princess and also had Dawn Princess in St. Kitts the same day. We took a taxi to Turtle beach there and YES there were cute little monkeys that you could buy peanuts and feed. The ride is about a 45 minute ride, very scenic and well worth the time, nice beach. You can also share rides with others, we were with quite a few cruisers from Dawn on the trip there and back, have fun.

Green Monkeys are all over Bardados, especially Welshman's Gulley. Their actually considered a pest there because of their abundance and what they do to farmers crops there. There are lots of folks with "tame" monkeys that will let you hold them or hand feed them for a buck or two tip. We've also seen them in Grenada, Guadalope, and Dominica, but they were the most plentiful for us in Bardados.

You know what, in St. Kitts people go to Turtle Bay/Beach not to see turtles but to see and feed monkeys. They are so used to people but if they've been fed earlier, you might not see them. Or, if they're really hungry, the can get aggressive. Hope this helps.
